Tarp

Visit the small town of Tarp just 20 km south of the Danish border. As you drive towards Tarp, the first thing you see is the old Dutch windmill, which is the town's landmark.

Enjoy a walk on the city's "owl trail", where young sculptors have created various oak sculptures of owls. A total of 64 sculptures are scattered along the 6 km path, which starts at the Friedhof car park and stretches along the River Thraben in a lovely protected nature area.

In Tarp you can also experience the close proximity to Denmark and the historical aspect, as the town used to be part of Denmark. Visit the Danish church, for example. The small village also has both an evangelistic and a catholic church.

There are many green areas around the city and from the city you can, for example, take a walk in the Findlingsgarten, where you can find a collection of 72 walking blocks with explanations about the origin and material of the stone.

Fröruper Berge

Naturreservatet Fröruper Berge blev etableret i 1936. Landskabet er kendt for sit store moseområde, som blev skabt under istiden. Store dele af området er fredet.

Flensburg

Flensburg is a lively port city with a rich cultural life and a varied shopping offer, which is all too often overlooked. Many Danes simply cross the border for soft drinks and tobacco without taking a closer look at Flensburg, which is a shame as the city really has something to offer.

Flensburg has an interesting history, beautiful buildings and good places to eat. The city was one of the few in northern Germany not to be destroyed during the Second World War, so you'll find many historic buildings from all stylistic periods. The historic city centre, which is influenced by Danish and German building culture, is a living testimony to Flensburg's 700-year history.

Flensburg is an old seafaring town built around the natural harbour at the end of Flensburg Fjord. Today the harbour is a lively area with plenty of eateries, museums and ships. The port is also steeped in history, which you can learn more about at the maritime museum, where all the texts are in English. It's clear everywhere that Flensburg has been under the Danish crown for a full 400 years. For example, many street names in the city are Danish.

Flensburg really is a paradise for anyone who likes to shop. Rotestrasse has about 500 shops with favourable prices for Danes. You'll also find several cosy back alleys and alleyways, which are particularly popular at Christmas time. Holmen with its beautiful old town houses is the pedestrian meeting point with several of the city's department stores.

Gottorp Slot

Visit Gottorp Castle with its beautiful baroque gardens and three art museums; the National Museum of Art, Cultural History and Archaeology.

The castle is located at the bottom of the river Slien and has played an important role in the many wars between the Danish kings and the Gottorp dukes.

Frederik I also ruled Denmark from Gottorp Castle.

Schleswig

Schleswig is just 40 km south of the Danish border and offers exciting history and culture. The city is over 1200 years old and calls itself the first city of Northern Europe. A stroll around the centre is recommended, where the city's cathedral is enthroned and hints at little Schleswig's more colourful past. Vikings settled along the Slien fjord, making the area an economic hub for 200 years. Later, the Dukes of Gottorp made Schleswig their power base from the 16th to 18th centuries. You can learn more about this historical heritage in the town's many museums.

Kruså

Explore Southern Denmark and visit the historic town of Kruså. It was here that the German troops in 1940 moved across the border to Denmark, and today you can drive across the historic border and take advantage of advantageous border trade. For many years, Kruså was the only border crossing into Germany. At Møllesøen in Kruså, you can watch the town's watermill from outside and walk around the lake in the beautiful Tunneldal, which was created during the Ice Age. Glücksburg Castle

The castle is considered one of the most important Renaissance castles in the Nordic countries. The water castle is located in the town of Glücksburg on a dammed-up dam, which was built on a 2.5-metre-high granite plinth. The connection to land was over a bridge. Before the Second Schleswig War in 1864, the castle was a Danish royal residence where Frederik VII spent part of his time and he died here in 1863, the year before the war.

Friedrichstadt

Friedrichstadt looks very much like a typical Dutch canal town. That's why this romantic little town is called "Little Amsterdam". The town was built by the Dutch in 1621, where the rivers Ejderen and Treene flow together. Picturesque serrated gables and beautiful facades are reflected in the canals, and the houses are filled with carvings on doors and windows. The Dutch emblazoned the winding streets of the town, which intersect.
