Hankø

If you are on a self-drive holiday in southern Norway and need a dip in the water, a visit to Hankø is recommended. Hankø is an island on the eastern side of the Oslofjord. This is where the royals stay and have sailed for generations. There are also many good swimming spots, so remember to bring your best swimwear on the trip. Unless guests know someone with a boat, or own one themselves, it might be very nice to know that there are departures between Hankø and the mainland during the day.

City ferries - Fredrikstad

Go on a car holiday to Norway and hop on one of the city ferries in Fredrikstad that sail between Isegran, Gamlebyen, Gressvik, and dock in the city centre. These are short trips of about a minute, but are a great way to get familiar with the city. It is free to use the 'City Ferries' and it is also not a problem if you have a bike with you, it also comes on board for free. A great Norwegian restaurant in Østfold that definitely deserves a visit. Restaurant Slippen in Frederikstad serves homemade dishes based on seasonal ingredients and the chef's antics, and yes, it's a good idea to book a table in advance, which is something you'll understand after a gastronomic visit.

Gamlebyen - Fredrikstad

The historic district of Fredrikstad is probably the region's most loved and appreciated attraction. The well-preserved town was founded in 1567 by none other than the Danish King Frederik II.

There's an open market and several galleries and speciality shops, and if the grandchildren or kids have joined you on this wonderful trip, stop by the 'Old Town Model Railway Station' where the kids can feed the goats right next to the playground.

Frederikstad's Old Town is also a popular place to eat, with many delicious restaurants in the area offering a variety of international and local delicacies.

Model railway in Gamlebyen

Take the kids to the 'Old Town Model Railway Center' which is a model railway covering about 400 square meters in Frederikstad and which is a bit of a treat for kids, adults, lots of enthusiasts and you are guaranteed to become one after a visit. Food and drinks are served in the Railway Café and there is also a shop selling everything from building materials to model railways . It is a model railway facility covering 400 square metres in Fredrikstad. All young and old train fans should take the trip here. The railroad café serves food and drinks in the backyard and there is also an on-site shop that makes a living selling building materials for model railroads. A great opportunity to buy some toys.

Sparta Amfi

Norway's first ice rink was built in Sarpsborg, and local hockey fans unequivocally root for the 'Sparta Warriors', the big team in this hockey town. Be sure to check the calendars and see if ice hockey is being played, it's an absolute blast and something Norway lives and breathes.
