Gaustabanen
If you'd like to take in the stunning views from the top of the 1883-metre Gaustatoppen mountain, but think it's a bit too far to walk, take the Gaustabanen, which takes you to the top of the mountain in just 15 minutes. The first 860 metres are done in a battery-powered carriage. After that, take the aerial tram, which has a 40-degree incline, so you're guaranteed both a spectacular ride and views.
Krossobanen
Visit Norway on a cheap self-drive holiday. If you're travelling to the Oslo area, the Krossobanen is located west of Oslo and is known as Northern Europe's first cable car. The lowest cable station has a large car park, and from here the brave are transported up to almost 900 metres above sea level. There are stunning views of Rjukan, Gaustatoppen, Vermork and the area where the famous sabotage of the heavy water plant took place. At the top, hot coffee is served at the Gvepseborg Café. Find child-friendly hotels and take the whole family on an active holiday in the beautiful Norwegian countryside. There are great opportunities for lovely walks in the fresh mountain air.
The battle for heavy water
If you are interested in history, stop by Vemork near the town of Rjukan, where the battle for heavy water took place during WWII. World War II. The Germans had heavy water produced here for their atomic project, and if they had succeeded in their research with heavy water, they could probably have built an atomic bomb, which would have had serious consequences for the development of the war. Norway was occupied by the Germans in 1940 and during the war 4 acts of sabotage were carried out on the spot until finally in early 1943 the Norwegian resistance and Allied forces succeeded in putting an end to the production of heavy water and thus the Nazi nuclear programme.
