Rakfiskfestivalen

November is the month of the year for all rake fishing enthusiasts. How about stopping by for the Rakfisk Festival in Valdres? This is one of Norway's biggest food festivals, with around 25,000 festival-goers flocking to the small village of Fagernes each year. It's three days of music performances and serving of fantastic rakfisk.

Today, Rakfisk from Valdres is a protected geographical indication.

The village of Fagernes

Go on holiday with children and find a child-friendly hotel at Risskov when you travel to Norway. Drive to Valdres and visit its village centre in the heart of Valdres. It has shops, a cultural centre and a popular theatre scene. Valdres Folkemuseum is within walking distance of the Fagernes centre, where you can spend many hours.

Several festivals are organised every year around the Fagernes. For example, the Rakfisk festival in November. In the summer, the Jørn Hilme folk music festival is held in Fagernes, and has been celebrated since the 1960s. You can also experience Valdres Summer Symphony, Bitihorn Classic, Vinjerock and Trollrock.

The village is located in a beautiful landscape by Neselva among mighty mountains. Here you will find plenty of opportunities for mountain hiking.

Fagernes is also known for its fishing opportunities and has several times hosted world championships in fly fishing and casting. So there are also great opportunities for an active holiday for the whole family on a wonderful self-drive holiday to Norway.

Valdres Folk Museum

The Valdres Folk Museum is one of the country's largest open-air museums, located within walking distance of the village of Fagernes, in the heart of Valdres. There are 100 old buildings, including a warehouse as it looked in the 13th century.

If you fancy listening to some Norwegian folk music, you can explore their large collection of music from the region.

You can also buy traditional instruments such as violins and strings.

Jørn Hilme festival

Jørn Hilme stemnet is an annual folk music festival in Fagerne that has been held since the 1960s. The festival is named after the fiddler Jørn Hilme, born in 1778, who is considered one of the most influential musicians in the Valdres music tradition. During the week long festval there are concerts, music and dance courses.

Strandmo Stengeystery

If you are on a mini break in Valdres, you should visit the many open farms in the area. Valdres has Northern Europe's largest continuous farm area with around 400 farms and several of these offer tastings and sales of, among other things, rums, cheeses and cured meats.

During the three summer months there are a number of activities at Strandmo Stølsysteri. Anny and Geir Harald Fodnes, who run the farm, prefer to sell directly to customers.

Noraker Farm

If you haven't tasted rakfisk before, this is your chance to try this Norwegian delicacy. You can stop by Noraker Gård, where rakfisk is produced and sold.

Rakfisk is fermented trout with potatoes, cream, butter, leeks and onions. However, there are new, modern ways to serve rakfisk, including rakfisk toast with mustard. Rakfisk is Norwegian food culture at its best.

The farm also serves other Norwegian delicacies from all over Valdres.

Valdres Alpine Centre

Take the whole family on a ski holiday in Norway and visit Valdres Alpinsenter, located in Aurdal and offering 5 ski lifts and 15 different slopes with varying degrees of difficulty. The ski area is located at 700 to 1060 metres altitude and is suitable for snowboarding, skiing and families with children. The children's area offers two children's lifts (a saucer lift and a belt lift). You can use the belt lift free of charge.

Valdres Alpinsenter offers instruction at all levels in several different disciplines.

Ski hire is available close to the lift and parking is good.
