Sälen

Sälen, a quaint and charming Swedish village, has a rich history and a plethora of attractions that draw visitors from around the globe. Nestled in the Dalarna County, Sälen is best known for its winter sports, with skiing being a significant part of its history. The area has been a hub of Nordic skiing since the early 20th century and is home to the world's longest cross-country ski race, Vasaloppet. This 90-kilometer race, held annually since 1922, commemorates a historic journey made by the future King Gustav Vasa in 1520, symbolising the enduring spirit and resilience of the Swedish people. The most interesting regions in Sälen are Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, and Hundfjället, collectively known as the Sälen Mountains. Each region has its unique charm and attractions. Lindvallen, the largest of the four regions, is a haven for skiers with over 50 slopes of varying difficulty levels, and is also home to the Experium – a vibrant leisure centre with a water park, cinema and spa. Högfjället, with its serene beauty and picturesque trails, is ideal for cross-country skiing and hiking. Tandådalen is a paradise for adrenaline junkies, offering some of the most challenging ski slopes, while Hundfjället is loved for its enchanting Troll Forest – a magical experience for both children and adults.

Sälen’s history is not just confined to its winter sports. The area also has a rich cultural heritage dating back centuries. The local Sami people have left a significant imprint on the region with their traditional reindeer herding practices and their distinctive craftwork still being preserved and celebrated today. Visitors can explore the Sami culture at the Fjällforsen Sami Camp, or take a historical journey at the Zorn Museum in nearby Mora, which showcases the life and works of the famous Swedish artist Anders Zorn.
