The Alsace region is a popular destination in France for self-drive holidays. Located in the north-east of France and bordering Switzerland and Germany, Alsace is beautifully situated in the heart of Europe. It is also one of France's most beautiful wine regions, with picturesque towns, historic castles and of course beautiful countryside and a fantastic regional menu of delicious delicacies and wonderful wines. There are many interesting and idyllic towns in Alsace that are well worth a visit when you are in your own car. One of the absolute favourites is the medieval town of Obernai, located about 25 km southeast of Strasbourg at the foot of the Saint Odile mountain. The town is included in "Les 100 Plus Beaux Détours de France" - a list of the 100 most inviting detours in France. The beautiful and colourful half-timbered houses with filled and fragrant flower tubs give the town a very special atmosphere. You can also visit Colmar, the capital of Alsace wine and therefore one of the 10 most visited towns in France. The town has a huge cultural heritage with beautiful details from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

In north-west France, the region of Normandy offers beautiful landscapes, idyllic towns and lovely beaches. Normandy is particularly famous for having laid the groundwork for D-Day, the day on 6 June 1944 when the Allies landed in Normandy during World War II. The landings were part of an operation with the ultimate aim of liberating Europe from German occupation. West of the town of Colleville-sur-Mer, an American war cemetery was established after the war. Today it is a much-visited cemetery with 9,386 graves and a memorial to 1,557 missing. The cemetery is very beautiful and you can feel the wings of history here. In Normandy you can also discover the impressive tidal island of Mont Saint-Michel, which has 61 historic monuments and the abbey at the top of the island.

You can also go on a city break in Paris, also known as La Ville Lumière, the City of Light. Paris is second to none when it comes to charm, impressive buildings, street life, boulevards, cafés, restaurants, museums and art. The possibilities for discovery in Paris are endless. There are many museums in the city, but favourites for visitors include the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay, the Army Museum & Hôtel des Invalides and the Centre Pompidou. You can also visit the beautiful cathedral, Notre-Dame, or the impressive church of Sacre-Coeur in Montmartre. Of course, don't miss a visit to Paris' landmark, the Eiffel Tower, and a trip past the Arc de Triomphe on Place Charles de Gaulle is also a must. If you have children with you, they will find the Parc Zoologique a super experience, with five biozones, a greenhouse and a forest area, where great efforts have been made to provide better conditions and space for animals, as well as to promote the protection of endangered species. Of course, you can also visit the ever-popular Disneyland Paris, which is guaranteed to keep children happy.
