The Square with the Five Wells

Between the medieval city walls and the old Renaissance bastion, Grimani, lies the oldest park in Croatia, which hides a special gem, the 'Trg pet bunara', or Square of Five Wells. In medieval times there was a defensive rampart under the old city walls and later in the 16th century the Venetians helped the city against a Turkish siege by building a large water reservoir with five wells.

The fountains are no longer in use and the square has become a popular venue for concerts and events, but it is also one of the best places to take a long walk in the beautiful and well-maintained park.

The park is named after Queen Jelena Madije and was founded by the Austrian commander Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden in 1829, who was a passionate botanist and admirer of the Dalmatian flora.
