Imola

The town dates back to antiquity and was named 'Forum Cornelli' after Lucius Cornelius Sulla, who founded the Roman colony on the same site. The town's name, Imola, is local dialect for 'oak' and was a place name to be 'seen' from the top of surrounding hills, and 'oak' then referred to the town.

Visit the imposing Rocca Sforzesca, also known as the Imola Fortress, which dates back to the 13th century and is certainly visible in the landscape. There is an exhibition of rare ancient weapons and medieval pottery. From the top of the fortress, there is a stunning view over Imola and the plain with the Appennine mountain range in the background.

Among the many palaces located in the historic centre, Palazzo Tozzoni stands out for its collection of beautifully preserved furniture and an interesting cellar that houses a wide range of historical artefacts linked to the castle's past.

Imola is also home to the famous Enzo e Dino Ferrari race track, which has hosted a number of Formula 1 races.

In June the town hosts a music festival and in September ´CRAME, where enthusiastic collectors of vintage cars, motorcycles, bicycles swap and sell. A great experience, and an obvious destination for a motoring holiday if beautiful classic vehicles are of interest.
