Nyhavn

Find a cheap weekend break in Copenhagen at Risskov and discover the idyllic harbour district of old Copenhagen dating back to the 1670s and excavated as an alternative to the pre-existing harbour. Nyhavn used to be known as a more seedy neighbourhood, but in the early 1980s the whole area was given a facelift and today Nyhavn is home to a wide range of delicious restaurants, bars and cafés, and there's nothing better than enjoying a cold drink on one of the many harbour terraces on a warm sunny day. The old, colourful and sometimes quirky houses along the quayside are beautiful and colourful, and there is always a festive and good atmosphere on the quayside. H.C. Andersen lived for five years in No. 20, where he wrote a number of his best-known works, including The Princess and the Lighthouse. The Royal Library Garden

The library garden is a small green spot, well hidden away in the busy capital. This little green oasis is located on Slotsholmen, between Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Library, with Christian IV's old Stock Exchange building in the background.

Today, the garden is filled with beds and beautiful flowers and surrounded by tall shrubs and shady trees. In the middle is a low pool with a water sculpture in the middle.

The garden was built in 1920 on top of Christian IV's former war port, Tøjhushavnen. At the end of the garden, old mooring rings are still built into the walls for the 17th and 18th century ships that were berthed there.

There is also a sculpture of the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, looking sadly into the horizon. It is said that it was here that he had to propose to Regine Olsen, with whom he was very much in love.

War Museum

This is truly a museum of gunpowder and bullets, housed in Christian IV's beautiful early 16th century Renaissance building. Today, the War Museum has a very large and interesting display of weapons and weaponry, from Samurai swords to German V-1 rockets, but the sabres and the many firearms in particular have a special nostalgic and historical atmosphere about them. On the first floor there is an exhibition on the 21 wars in which Denmark has participated over the last 500 years. In general, this historic building hides very beautiful and well preserved weapons. Take the tour to Tøjhusgade 3 and experience the evolution of weaponry over the last several hundred years.

The Marble Church

Amalienborg

The National Museum

A trip to the National Museum is always a great experience, and here you can follow the history of Denmark, from the Ice Age up to today's society. The National Museum is housed in the Prince's Palace, built in the mid-1800s, and some of the very beautiful halls still stand as they did when the royals had their daily routine in the mansion.

The permanent exhibition on Denmark's Antiquity includes the Grundestrup vessels and other Viking treasures. You can also see the Egtved Girl and the Huldremose Woman, who met a terrible fate. The National Museum also houses the world's largest collection of artefacts from Greenland and boasts a world-class ethnographic collection, complemented by a Toy Museum and the large Coin and Medal Collection. A few educational hours can easily be spent here and the museum also organises plenty of activities for the children, so everyone is guaranteed good entertainment among the many treasures and Danefæ.

The Royal Stables

The Royal Stables and the Riding Arena are the only remains of Christian VI's Baroque castle to have survived both castle fires, which burned and devastated most of the castle twice. At one time there were over 250 horses stabled here, but today there are only 20 left, which are used when the Queen's Golden Carriage is hitched up for the grand celebrations held by the Royal Family. In the Royal Stables' Harness Museum, visitors can see the carriages used by past kings and queens. The oldest carriage is Queen Juliane Marie's state carriage from around 1778. Christian V's favourite horse from 1600 was stuffed and can also be seen in the stables together with Frederik VII's horse, Perlen, which also suffered the same fate, stuffing. The Black Diamond

In 1999, The Black Diamond became the latest addition to The Royal Library at Slotsholmen. It is intended to be a repository for our cultural heritage. The large building is 20,733 square metres in total, spread over eight floors. The facade of the Black Diamond takes up 2,500 square metres and is decorated with 'Absolute Black' granite, which originates from Zimbabwe and is both cut and polished in northern Italy.

There is a nice café on the ground floor, and the actual library function is just above the ground floor, on the 'lending bridge'. Despite the monolithic structure, which has been the subject of much debate, Copenhageners have grown accustomed to the black block, which has become more common over time among both the Renaissance buildings and the newer buildings along the canal.

Carlsberg Glyptotek

The Glyptotek in the centre of Copenhagen exhibits an impressive collection of antique art and works from the 19th and 20th centuries in magnificent surroundings. The museum was founded by brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). The Glyptotek's permanent collection contains around 10,000 works of art divided into two main collections. Christiansborg

Christiansborg Palace, located on the small island of Slotsholmen, is divided into two. One part of the palace is used by The Queen for gala dinners, and is open to visitors on a daily basis. The other part of the palace houses the Folketing, the Supreme Court and the Prime Minister's Office. In the heart of the palace, the Knights' Hall, hangs The Queen's famous and colourful tapestries with detailed descriptions of Denmark's history over 1000 years. The tapestries were created by the artist Bjørn Nørgaard.

Christiania

Christiania makes up almost half of Copenhagen's preserved ramparts, giving it a unique location on Christianshavn. Christiania, or 'The City' as it is also known, was established in 1971 and is always worth a visit when the sun shines. Experience the alternative way of life, the fun houses, the many sculptures, small shops, or visit one of Christiania's many cafés and eateries. There are often concerts and other cultural events, and if you've brought your skateboard, don't miss the city's very own skate park. At Christmas time, there is always a very atmospheric Christmas market in the 'Grey Hall', with fun features and lots of stalls and small food outlets.

Botanical Garden, Copenhagen

Copenhagen is one of those cities where you never know what time of year it is: In spring, love is in the air and people from all walks of life slowly spread out in the city's gardens and parks. In summer, there's singing and smiling in the streets, big ice cream cones, beach life on Amager and a party atmosphere in Nyhavn. And in autumn, the smell of wet asphalt and the city's greenery are replaced by beautiful shades of red, brown and orange. And it's safe to say that Christmas is certainly no exception. As Christmas approaches, Copenhagen transforms into a magical cityscape of twinkling lights, grand decorations, garlands and hearts. Tivoli puts on the long lights, the D'angleterre building gets dressed up for Christmas and Kronprinsensgade is adorned with its beautiful ceiling of fairy lights. The unmistakable smell of Christmas sweets and the sound of choral singing and festive music waft through the air. Christmas in Copenhagen officially kicks off on the first Sunday of Advent when, after the big Christmas parade has made its way through the city, Santa Claus lights the big Christmas tree on Rådhuspladsen. Most of the city's Christmas markets, however, get a head start on the festivities and usually open around mid-November.

One of the city's most popular Christmas markets is of course Tivoli's classic Christmas market. In addition to the stunning lightscapes in the garden, you will find more than 50 different stalls with everything between heaven and earth. However, it should be mentioned that it costs 200 DKK to visit the Tivoli exhibition and market.

The large and traditional Christmas market on Højbro Square, also known as "Deutsch's Julemarked", is free to experience. The market is set up by Michael Deutsch, in collaboration with the City of Copenhagen, and more than 280,000 Christmas lights provide the backdrop for the many stalls.

In Nyhavn, too, Christmas is on the agenda, complete with a fantastic seaside Christmas atmosphere with lights, open fires, mulled wine and apple slices and everything else that goes with it. You might even be lucky enough to see Carlsberg's old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage trundling past.

If the streets get a little too crowded and alarmed, you can regain your calm and cool with a trip up the Round Tower. Here you can get a fantastic view of the city's glittering lights and enjoy the Christmas spirit from a distance.

Another of the city's cosy Christmas markets is the charming and relatively new H.C. Andersen Christmas Market, located on Strøget in the heart of Copenhagen. Here you can meet Santa Claus, wild Vikings and H.C. himself. Andersen, warm your hands on a cup of nice hot mulled wine and eat traditional German charcoal-grilled sausages.
