Grindheim Church in Etne

During a wonderful holiday near Etnesjøen, you have the opportunity to visit some of the region's most charming churches. Grindheim Church is a beautiful white wooden church, erected back in 1728, and located on the eastern outskirts of the village. It is believed that there was church activity here even earlier - as far back as the 1300s - and in fact the area is thought to house the largest pre-Christian burial ground in the whole region, with more than 200 burial mounds. Another beautiful wooden church nearby that is certainly worth a visit is the long church of Stødle, which lies further west, closer to the centre of Etnesjøen.

Sæbøtunet

Visit the authentic farm museum, Sæbøtunet, in Etnesjøe, and get an exciting insight into life and building traditions in the years between 1700 and 1800. Sæbøtunet is the largest authentic farm museum in Sunnhordland and offers a unique journey through time, where you can see old buildings, furniture, textiles and much more from this period. During a major renovation of the farm in 2006, a small amphitheatre was built, which has since been used extensively by schools, kindergartens and various organisations.

Langfoss

Visit perhaps Western Norway's greatest attraction, Langfoss, during your holiday near Etnesjøen! The majestic waterfall, with a drop of more than 600 metres, is the country's fifth highest and in 2006 it was awarded the World's Most Beautiful Waterfall by the World Waterfall Database. So when you're on holiday in the area, it's an absolute must to take the trip out and see it for yourself.

Folgefonna National Park

Folgefonna National Park is located on a peninsula in Hardangerfjorden. It is home to the third largest glacier on the Norwegian mainland. The glacier has been a tourist attraction since 1833. Today there are various guided tours in the national park; hike in the beautiful, dramatic landscape above Folgefonna, row a kayak and get up close to the waterfalls and much more.

Troldetungen

Trolltunga, known in Danish as Troldetungen, is a rock formation hanging in the air about 1,000 metres above Ringedalsvatnet in Odda. The rock outcrop resembles a troll telling jokes to passers-by and the view from Trolltunga is unique. The beautiful mountain landscape spreads out over the horizon, where man has lived in harmony with the enchanting nature since time immemorial.

Although the hike up to Troldetungen is a demanding 4-5 hours, it is worth it and Troldetungen is frequently visited by adventurous hikers all year round, but especially during the high season from June to September. Today, the small mountain plateau with its spectacular panoramic views attracts more than 100,000 visitors a year. As a natural consequence of the many visitors and safety, several professional mountain guides have been stationed along the steep stretch up to the Troldetungen. But it hasn't always been like this. In the past, hardly anyone ventured up the cliff face, and with good reason. The Norwegian laws from around the 11th century stated that the trolls in the Norwegian mountains should be left alone!

Nature is abundant but challenging and you should take precautions if you venture out on the beautiful route up to Troldetungen. The walk starts in Skjeggedal and follows a 4 km steep and winding road to Mågelitopp, where there is also a parking area. The terrain flattens out a bit and there are great views of Hardangervidda to the east. Then the walk continues along the mountainside high above Ringedalsvatnet.

You can also follow the old route along the cable car from Skjeggedal to Mågelitopp. Fewer people choose this route, with its 1,000 steps that follow the steep path up to Trolltunga.

Before you start on this beautiful challenge, you should take all the necessary and safety precautions. Remember to check the weather forecast too. A good pair of hiking shoes or boots and extra clothing, preferably rainproof, as well as plenty of drinks. Start early in the morning, the round trip takes around 8-10 hours, so it will be a long but stunningly beautiful day.

Baroniet Rosendal

Låtefossen

Låtefoss is a 165 m high waterfall located in Odda, in Hordaland county in Norway. It is probably the most famous of all the waterfalls in the Oddadalen, and is quite special as it has two overflows from Låtevatnet, which flow together in the middle of the waterfall.
