Skarrild

Skarrild is a small village with 330 inhabitants in West Jutland located in the middle of the magnificent nature, about 20 min. drive south of Herning. The village is surrounded by forests and heather hills, which together with Skjern Ådal offer many good nature experiences.

When you come from the north and drive down towards the river in Skarrild town, between the cemetery wall and the road, there is a small thatched house. This is the Skarrild-Karstoft Museum and Local Archive. The association's mission is to promote interest in the history of the parish, and to collect, record and store objects and records. The modest house is happy to open its doors if you would like to learn about Skarrild and the surrounding area. Inside the low but cosy rooms, one of them is decorated as a memorial to 7 Allied airmen who were shot down on 27 August 1944, and were buried in Skarrild cemetery. The museum also has a genealogical register of some 13,000 names of people from Skarrild and the surrounding area. There are many enquiries from people looking for information about their ancestors. There are enquiries from abroad as well as from Denmark.

HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art

One of Herning's many prides is certainly HEART - Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, a unique building designed by American architect Steven Holl. HEART opened its doors in 2009 and offers visitors an exciting insight into both Danish and international contemporary art. There are changing special exhibitions covering all forms and types of contemporary art and in all types of media. There are also thematic group exhibitions and the collection itself is based on conceptual and experimental art from the 1930s to the present day. There are works by the Italian artist Piero Manzoni and the collection also includes works by Paul Gadegaard, Ingvar Cronhammar, Bjørn Nørgaard and many other artists.

The ´Socle du Monde biennial´ is the place where young artists create new creations together with Herning's companies. Ribe Domkirke

The cathedral is also Ribe's landmark and easy to spot in the flat landscape that characterises the region. It took about 100 years to complete the church, which was built around 1250. But since then there have been many additions and alterations, and today the cathedral is the site of a number of tombs to the most powerful men in the kingdom and the city. There is also an epitaph, donated by Valdemar Sejr, in honour of his son who died in 1231. A little south of the cathedral, Christian graves have been found, so perhaps Ansgar's church was also located there. A great experience to go back in time in historic Denmark and see for yourself the famous tombs and the beautiful decorations of the cathedral.

Royal Jelling

Not far from Billund is Kongernes Jelling, an experience centre in Jelling where visitors can travel back over 1000 years in time, to the Viking Age, when kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth lived and set their rune stones in Jelling. One of the greatest gems in Danish history is the Viking fortress built by Harald Bluetooth. Christmas market in Ribe

December is a very special month in Ribe, where all the streets are decorated for Christmas. The perfect place to get into the Christmas shopping spirit. Visit the Christmas market in Ribe, which is all about "Peter's Christmas". The classic tale of Peter's Christmas is Mathilde Cold F. Kjær's childhood story of her own Christmas in Ribe. Her childhood home, Porsborg, has now been converted into Ribe Tourist Office.

In Ribe, the Christmas market is built around Peter's Christmas, and in the town's cobbled streets, from November until Christmas, it is possible to walk around and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in the fairytale Christmas market that forms the framework for Christmas traditions in the oldest market town in Scandinavia.

With a history that can be traced back to around 700, when the first trading post was built, there is plenty of history in the city. Many of the well-preserved buildings and houses are now listed, and together with Denmark's oldest town hall form a historic setting. The town hall dates back to 1496, and has served as the town hall since 1709.

The Christmas market in town consists of a number of stalls where it is possible to buy everything from Christmas confectionery, to traditional pretzels and gingerbread, as well as all sorts of alternative homemade Christmas gifts.
