Nordisk Film

Nordisk Film is the world's oldest film company and has been a part of Danish film history for more than 100 years. It all began with Ole Olsen back in 1906, when Nordisk Film was established in Valby and soon after established itself in the silent film market - ahead of competitors like Hollywood itself! Ever since, Nordisk Film has remained where it is today, playing a vital role in Danish film production both at home and on the world stage.

A visit to Nordisk Film in Valby is a must when you're on holiday nearby. During your visit, you can go on exciting tours, see various exhibitions, listen to lectures and much more. The permanent Danish Film Treasury tour gives you 75 minutes of entertainment packed with exciting stories about colourful film productions, clever film tricks and a unique look behind the scenes. Until July 2019, Nordisk Film is running an extraordinary Olsen Banden exhibition. Here you can experience everything from familiar sets to original costumes and memorabilia from the popular films.

ZOO, Copenhagen

With over 3,000 animals in over 264 exciting species, Frederiksberg Zoo is always an experience in a class of its own. Take the tour of the 'Arctic Ring' and get up close to the animals that live in the cold regions of the Arctic Circle. Meet the polar bears and seals, both under and above water. Also visit the famous Elephant House, considered one of the best in the world. In the Children's Zoo, the little ones are catered for, petting the dwarf goats and watching the farm animals being fed at close quarters. The Tropezoo is filled with snakes, crocodiles, pygmy deer, birds and lots of beautiful butterflies that thrive in the beautifully landscaped rainforest.

The zoo at Frederiksberg is a small peaceful oasis in the middle of the otherwise busy city, which guarantees great experiences for both young and old who love animals.

Glostrup

Glostrup is located on the west side of Copenhagen, 10 km from the city centre, and even though you are not in the centre of the capital, you will find plenty to do. Beautiful nature areas, scenic cycling routes, lovely beaches and marinas where children and adults can frolic. Vestegnen has several exciting museums and a rich music and theatre scene. You can watch Super League football, professional ice hockey or test your skills on the region's golf courses. Vestegnen has something for everyone.

Also visit Glostrup Town Hall, which consists of four buildings and was designed by Arne Jakobsen. There are also two other buildings attached to the town hall, which were formerly a brewer's villa and part of the old Glostrup Brewery. There is also a pleasant town hall park, where you can see a multitude of large chestnut trees and the beautiful sculpture "two sisters at play".

If the weather is nice, we recommend a walk in Glostrup Bypark. The city park is the city's answer to a romantic garden. Here you'll find winding paths, fine art and lots of rhododendrons. In the city park you will also find a small lake with a romantic balcony, breathtaking old trees and a playground for the little ones.

Glostrup is also home to Zealand's largest stone, the Hvissingestenen. The 250-tonne stone is considered a rare natural phenomenon and is located in the West Forest. The forest is a recreational area among the many urban areas, where you can enjoy a varied landscape with large plains, hills, lakes and artificial hilly landscapes.

Frederiksberg Garden

The beautiful park on Frederiksberg runs right up to Copenhagen's ZOO and was originally built by Frederik IV. The park was to be the setting for Frederiksberg Palace, and today there are still remnants of the Baroque garden and the beautiful landscape gardens. There are lakes and canals, skating in winter, and in summer it's a great place to lie and laze in the natural and very beautiful surroundings that make the park so desirable.

Fisketorvet

Take a city break in Copenhagen and visit Fisketorvet, one of Denmark's largest shopping centres with a unique location in the capital right by the water. Here you will find many exciting shops with high class fashion as well as a cinema with Scandinavia's largest screen. The centre hosts regular events and activities, and there are restaurants to suit all tastes. Kødbyen, Copenhagen

Go on a self-drive holiday to Copenhagen and discover the Danish capital with the whole family. Visit Kødbyen, located in Vesterbro, which has become a very popular place to go out in Copenhagen. Here you'll find art galleries, nightclubs and restaurants alongside a few butcher's shops. For many decades the whole area has been the base for the meat industry, divided according to the colours of the buildings, the White, the Grey and the Brown Meat Town. Carlsberg Glyptotek

The Glyptotek in the centre of Copenhagen exhibits an impressive collection of antique art and works from the 19th and 20th centuries in magnificent surroundings. The museum was founded by brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). The Glyptotek's permanent collection contains around 10,000 works of art divided into two main collections. Tycho Brahe Planetarium

There is a lot to see and do in Copenhagen and one of the many family experiences is definitely a trip to the Planetarium. Often referred to as the 'Planetarium', the Tycho Brahe Planetarium has become the gathering place for all those who love the universe, the planets and not least space travel. But the Planetarium is first and foremost the place where the starry sky and the distant galaxies and planets can be seen on the 1,000 square metre dome screen of the IMAX theatre. Tivoli

Copenhagen Tivoli is an amusement park located in the centre of Copenhagen close to Copenhagen Central Station and Strøget. The park is the second oldest of its kind in the world, only Dyrehavsbakken is older. Tivoli was founded by Georg Carstensen in 1843. Try the park's many rides and enjoy an adventurous day with the family, or take a walk in the park and see the beautiful set-up. Tivoli is known for its beautiful Christmas exhibition, which can be enjoyed in December.

The National Museum

A trip to the National Museum is always a great experience, and here you can follow the history of Denmark, from the Ice Age up to today's society. The National Museum is housed in the Prince's Palace, built in the mid-1800s, and some of the very beautiful halls still stand as they did when the royals had their daily routine in the mansion.

The permanent exhibition on Denmark's Antiquity includes the Grundestrup vessels and other Viking treasures. You can also see the Egtved Girl and the Huldremose Woman, who met a terrible fate. The National Museum also houses the world's largest collection of artefacts from Greenland and boasts a world-class ethnographic collection, complemented by a Toy Museum and the large Coin and Medal Collection. A few educational hours can easily be spent here and the museum also organises plenty of activities for the children, so everyone is guaranteed good entertainment among the many treasures and Danefæ.

Copenhagen

Try a car holiday in Denmark and discover the capital Copenhagen at your own pace on a family self-drive holiday. There's plenty to see, so be sure to arrange a cheap hotel stay with us beforehand. Then you can get started exploring the Danish capital. Firstly, make sure you stop by one of Denmark's landmarks; The Little Mermaid. Christiansborg, the Round Tower and Rosenborg are among other sights to pass by. Of course, you should also take a stroll along Strøget, which starts at Rådhuspladsen and continues down to Kongens Nytorv. Here, shopping opportunities abound. If you continue across Kongens Nytorv, you'll come to Nyhavn. Nyhavn is at once modern Copenhagen's most popular and vibrant meeting place and an attraction of historical importance. Copenhagen is one of those cities where you never know what time of year it is: In spring, love is in the air and people from all walks of life slowly spread out in the city's gardens and parks. In summer, there's singing and smiling in the streets, big ice cream cones, beach life on Amager and a party atmosphere in Nyhavn. And in autumn, the smell of wet asphalt and the city's greenery are replaced by beautiful shades of red, brown and orange. And it's safe to say that Christmas is certainly no exception. As Christmas approaches, Copenhagen transforms into a magical cityscape of twinkling lights, grand decorations, garlands and hearts. Tivoli puts on the long lights, the D'angleterre building gets dressed up for Christmas and Kronprinsensgade is adorned with its beautiful ceiling of fairy lights. The unmistakable smell of Christmas sweets and the sound of choral singing and festive music waft through the air. You can experience all this with a wonderful Christmas holiday at one of our many hotels in Copenhagen.

Christmas in Copenhagen officially kicks off on the first Sunday of Advent when, after the big Christmas parade has made its way through the city, Santa Claus lights the big Christmas tree on Rådhuspladsen. Most of the city's Christmas markets, however, get a head start on the festivities and usually open around mid-November.

One of the city's most popular Christmas markets is of course Tivoli's classic Christmas market. In addition to the stunning lightscapes in the garden, you will find more than 50 different stalls with everything between heaven and earth. However, it should be mentioned that it costs 200 DKK to visit the Tivoli exhibition and market.

The large and traditional Christmas market on Højbro Square, also known as "Deutsch's Julemarked", is free to experience. The market is set up by Michael Deutsch, in collaboration with the City of Copenhagen, and more than 280,000 Christmas lights provide the backdrop for the many stalls.

In Nyhavn, too, Christmas is on the agenda, complete with a fantastic seaside Christmas atmosphere with lights, open fires, mulled wine and apple slices and everything else that goes with it. You might even be lucky enough to see Carlsberg's old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage trundling past.

If the streets get a little too crowded and alarmed, you can regain your calm and cool with a trip up the Round Tower. Here you can get a fantastic view of the city's glittering lights and enjoy the Christmas spirit from a distance.

Another of the city's cosy Christmas markets is the charming and relatively new H.C. Andersen Christmas Market, located on Strøget in the heart of Copenhagen. Here you can meet Santa Claus, wild Vikings and H.C. himself. Andersen, warm your hands on a cup of nice hot mulled wine and eat traditional German charcoal-grilled sausages.
