Aabenraa

Aabenraa is a cosy trading town in Southern Jutland and the charming old town offers cobbled streets and houses with beautifully decorated doors. In Aabenraa you can go shopping in Denmark's longest pedestrian street.

In Aabenraa you can visit the Maritime Museum, go to an art exhibition at the old railway station or visit the exciting art exhibitions at Brundlund Castle.

The city's big annual event is the Ringriderfesten, which takes place on the first weekend in July. Up to 500 horses parade through the city, accompanied by various orchestras from all over Europe. The parade ends at the big ring-riding arena, where young and old compete to become this year's ring-riding king.

Damgaard Mill

Damgaard Mill was built in 1867 after the Dutch model. The fascinating story of Baron Stampe and the new constitution of 1848, which forced farmers to have their grain milled at certain mills so that taxes could be collected, can be relived with a trip to the very interesting and well-maintained mill.

Security Position North

Security Position North is a fortress facility which the Germans planned during World War I. Security Position North was built in the period of 1916-1918 and was intended to prevent the invasion of Germany from the north. The fortress facility is amongst the best preserved in the world.

Gram Slot

The beautiful Gram Castle is surrounded by moats in green surroundings. The castle is located in the cosy town of Gram, where there is a great atmosphere.

The castle is now used as an event venue. It can accommodate up to 50,000 guests and offers concerts, holiday apartments and a large organic farm. In addition, history, culture, architecture and nature are highly valued and presented at the castle.

Haderslev

Haderslev is a 700 year old market town, which is marked by its long history. Fierce fires in 1627 and 1759 destroyed large parts of the town, but despite the devastation, it remains well preserved. After the fires, rococo gabled houses were built and many of them still remain, dating back to the 16th century - it is especially southeast of the cathedral that the old gabled houses can be found.

There are several guided tours around the city, and if you are interested in architectural history, we highly recommend a guided tour of the old town and the interesting stories hidden in the walls of the historic buildings.

The cathedral is part of the city centre and also Haderslev's landmark. The Gothic cathedral, also called the Church of Our Lady, can be seen from all sides as it is built on the highest point of the city. Most Fridays of the year, the Slevigske Musikkorps (Slevigian Music Corps) holds a guard parade from the barracks to the cathedral, where they turn over a page in the regiment's Book of Remembrance, honouring all the fallen from the regiment, from the battles against the Prussians and Austrians in 1864 to the last wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. So Haderslev is always worth considering when planning a holiday in Denmark or just going away for a relaxing weekend break.

Gråsten Castle, Castle Garden and Castle Church

Gråsten Castle was built in the 1500s and is a Danish hunting lodge.

Gråsten Castle Church is the only part of Gråsten Castle that is open to visitors.

Gråsten Palace Garden is an English-inspired landscape garden. In summer, visitors can enjoy the large rose and perennial beds, which radiate in a multitude of colours, and there is an outdoor exhibition that tells about the development of the castle garden.

Make a good purchase in one of the many shops just south of the border during your next car holiday to Southern Jutland or Northern Germany. The shops are full of goods at cheap prices, so you will definitely find something you can buy for home.

Flensburg

Flensburg is a lively port city with a rich cultural life and a varied shopping offer, which is all too often overlooked. Many Danes simply cross the border for soft drinks and tobacco without taking a closer look at Flensburg, which is a shame as the city really has something to offer.

Flensburg has an interesting history, beautiful buildings and good places to eat. The city was one of the few in northern Germany not to be destroyed during the Second World War, so you'll find many historic buildings from all stylistic periods. The historic city centre, which is influenced by Danish and German building culture, is a living testimony to Flensburg's 700-year history.

Flensburg is an old seafaring town built around the natural harbour at the end of Flensburg Fjord. Today the harbour is a lively area with plenty of eateries, museums and ships. The port is also steeped in history, which you can learn more about at the maritime museum, where all the texts are in English. It's clear everywhere that Flensburg has been under the Danish crown for a full 400 years. For example, many street names in the city are Danish.

Flensburg really is a paradise for anyone who likes to shop. Rotestrasse has about 500 shops with favourable prices for Danes. You'll also find several cosy back alleys and alleyways, which are particularly popular at Christmas time. Holmen with its beautiful old town houses is the pedestrian meeting point with several of the city's department stores.

Christmas market in Ribe

December is a very special month in Ribe, where all the streets are decorated for Christmas. The perfect place to get into the Christmas shopping spirit. Take a stroll through the cosy streets of the old town, which are decked out with Christmas lights and decorations, and settle down in one of the cafés where you can warm up with a cup of coffee or cocoa. Ribe in December is an ideal place to spend a mini break or a long weekend and get a lot of Christmas shopping done.

Visit the Christmas market in Ribe, which is all about "Peter's Christmas". The classic tale of Peter's Christmas is Mathilde Cold F. Kjær's childhood story of her own Christmas in Ribe. Her childhood home, Porsborg, has now been converted into Ribe Tourist Office.

In Ribe, the Christmas market is built around Peter's Christmas, and in the town's cobbled streets, from November until Christmas, it is possible to walk around and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in the fairytale Christmas market that forms the framework for Christmas traditions in the oldest market town in Scandinavia.

With a history that can be traced back to around 700, when the first trading post was built, there is plenty of history in the city. Many of the well-preserved buildings and houses are now listed, and together with Denmark's oldest town hall form a historic setting. The town hall dates back to 1496, and has served as the town hall since 1709.

The Christmas market in town consists of a number of stalls where it is possible to buy everything from Christmas confectionery, to traditional pretzels and gingerbread, as well as all sorts of alternative homemade Christmas gifts.

Christmas at Quedens Gaard in Ribe

Experience Christmas at the Old Merchant's Farm, which will be filled with old-fashioned Christmas spirit. A tour of the farm is an experience for all the senses, where the scents of all kinds of Christmas delights spread, while it will be possible to taste confectionery, pretzels and roasted almonds.
