The gardens are an extensive collection of shrubs, trees and plants that have been used for medicinal purposes. Many of the plants are still used today. Tranekær Castle

The castle, which dates from the time of Valdemar Sejr, is one of Denmark's most impressive and beautiful castles. It was originally built as a defensive castle with three-metre thick walls to prevent cannonballs from breaking through the fortress. Unfortunately, the castle is closed to the public, but just opposite the castle is Tranekær Castle Museum, where inventory from the castle is on display. A highly recommended visit, it gives a good impression of the castle's long history and the various artistic styles it has seen.

Valdemar Castle

Explore Valdemars Castle on Tåsinge near Svendborg. The magnificent castle was built under Christian IV around the middle of the 17th century and has now been turned into a castle and manor museum. The owners of the castle, who have reached the 12th generation, also live in the castle. Guests are free to wander among the old furniture and paintings in the many magnificent rooms and lounges and be impressed by the large halls. In addition to the castle, there is also a Hunting and Trophy Museum on the grounds. Throughout the year, the area around Valdemars Castle is also used for events such as markets and concerts.

Langeland

Go on a driving holiday in Denmark and explore the many beautiful and exciting places hidden around the country. Find an inn holiday or a cheap weekend break at Risskov and get away to beautiful Langeland. If you've brought your bikes, cycling around Langeland is a pure pleasure. There is an extraordinary network of cycle paths, which also makes the bicycle the preferred vehicle. The island, which is about 52 km long and 11 km wide, offers vast natural areas with large plains, lakes and marshes in the southern part of Langeland. In the midst of these beautiful surroundings there are about 60 wild horses running around. They thrive in their natural habitat, all year round and almost without human interference. The horses are of the exmoor breed and are one of the closest living examples of the now extinct European wild horse. Naturama

Naturama is Svendborg's zoological museum, which opened way back in 1935. It houses exhibitions on various themes such as "Giants of the Sea", where you can see some impressive whale skeletons. The exhibits consist mainly of skeletons and stuffed animals, but you can also see live animals such as walking sticks, red ants and various wheel spinners such as the crossed spider.

Svendborg

Svendborg is located in the south of Funen and is a maritime city with about 28,000 inhabitants. Svendborg's history goes back more than 750 years and the historic town centre invites you to stroll through the narrow streets and cosy courtyards surrounded by half-timbered houses. Svendborg is the second largest city on Funen, after Odense, and here you will find a good selection of shops, restaurants and cafés.

Svendborg is located on the Svendborg Sound near the Svendborg Sound Bridge, which connects Funen with the island of Tåsinge. From Svendborg Harbour you can take the ferry to Ærø, Drejø, Skarø, Hjortø or Birkholm if you want to visit the small islands in the South Funen Archipelago.

Svendborg is, due to its good location by the sea, a renowned shipping town, and there are still today several shipping companies in the city. In fact, Denmark's largest company originated in Svendborg when Captain Peter Mærsk Møller and his son Arnold Peter Møller bought a second-hand steamship in 1904 and formed A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg. In 2003, the company was renamed A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S, which is known throughout most of the world.
