Skänninge

In the monastery town of Skänninge, about 10 km north of Mjölby, you will find several historical sights. These include the ruins of St. Ingrids' Monastery, which was built in the early 13th century. This was Sweden's first female Dominican monastery. A curious story about Skänninge is that the first elephant in Sweden was displayed right here, back in 1806. The ticket prices were so high that it started a riot among the locals, which was so big that the military was called in to help quell the tempers. This rebellion was reported all over the country under the headline "The Elephant Rebellion in Skänninge". In Skänninge you can also visit St. Ingrids Gille, Skänninges Egnshistorieforening with its rosary, herb garden and three beautiful historic buildings.

St. Olofs Kloster og Vor Frue Kirke

Visit the ruins of St. Olofs Kloster, another Dominican monastery in Skänninge, which was founded in the early 13th century in Skänninge. Here you can find the beautiful Vor Frue church, which was built in the early 1400s

Högbystenen

If you are on summer holiday in the area, you should visit the Högby stone located approximately five km. north of Mjölby. The Högby stone dates back to the11th century and is located about 1 km north of Högby church at Högby old cemetery.

Mjölby Kirke

Also visit Mjölby Church, which was built in the 12th century and is particularly known for C.H. Crodel's stained glass windows. They represent the Trinity. The baptismal font was built in Skänninge and Vadstena between 1620 and 1670.

Mjölby

Mjölby is a charming little town, with about 13,000 inhabitants, located in Östergötland. The town has roots dating back to the Middle Ages, but the area has been used by people for much longer, as can be seen from the many old castles and tombs in the area. For example, you can visit the burial site, Kungshögarna.
