Visit the Stegeholm Castle Ruin

Stegeholm was a medieval former fortress near Slottsholmen in Västervik, on the small island of the same name, on the shallow waters of Gamlebyviken Bay. It was specifically designed to protect this estuary in the Baltic Sea. Stegeholm was founded in 1370 by Albrecht II. Duke of Mecklenburg, who had it built to secure the waterway to old Västervik, today's Gamleby at the end of the bay.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and had to be rebuilt several times after being destroyed, so that it was even converted into a luxurious castle in the 17th century. But this too was destroyed again and - unlike the town - was not completely rebuilt. Rather, the inhabitants of Västervik even received permission to use the ruins as a quarry for building their houses.

Thus, today you can experience the historical remains of the medieval castle.

Open-air concerts are often held in the summer.

Gränsö Castle Foundry

At Gränsö Castle Light Foundry, you can see how candles are made the old-fashioned way. The candles are made of a high quality candle mixture with fine wicks. It is a unique craft where each candle is handmade with great care. The candle foundry is adjacent to Kulbacken, where you will find Västervik Museum and the Unos Torn lookout tower. Of course, you can also swim at the popular beach at Gränsö Castle, where the water is not so deep, making it a good beach for children.

Lysingsbadet

Hasselö has a child-friendly sandy beach where you can hire bikes, kayaks and motor boats. The neighbouring island of Sladö is just one kilometre away and is a nature reserve where you can buy fish and take a walk in the open pastures.

Gamleby

Ca. 25 km. nord for Västervik, ligger Gamleby, hvor I finder Garpedansberget. På den 80 meter høje bakke ligger en skulpturpark i det magiske miljø. Langs klippevæggen kan I se på figurer som alfer, nisser, nymfer, lindorme og drager.

Virum Elk Park

You can also visit Virum Älgpark, where you can meet the majestic animals up close in their natural environment.
