Helgoland

On a mini holiday in northern Germany, you can sail from Büsum to Helgoland. Helgoland has led a changeable existence throughout the ages. Colonised in the 8th century by the Frisians and later subjugated by Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig. It became German in 1890 when the British traded it for Zanzibar. Its strategic location led to a strong fortification of the island already during World War I. Up to World War II, Hitler transformed it into a powerful submarine base. During World War II it was therefore also badly hit and after the war the British used it as a training target for bombers until they tried to blow it up on 18 April 1947. However, 6800 tonnes of explosives failed to destroy the island. In 1952 it was re-inhabited and rebuilt and today it is one of Germany's most popular holiday destinations and a duty-free zone.

Büsum

Not many people know that just 400 years ago the town was located on an island - in the middle of the Wadden Sea. Only towards the end of the 1500s did Büsum become landlocked as a result of natural land reclamation. Heath

Heide is known for the largest uninhabited marketplace in Germany, where they have the popular Wochenmarkt every Saturday morning/afternoon. You can find just about anything and also traditional items from the area.

It's also a good idea to take a walk in Heide and take a closer look at some of the town's fine buildings. Walk past the Church of St Jürgen, which was restored after a fire in 1560. Also walk past the old rectory, which is just opposite the church and was built back in 1739. The Postelheim on Südermarkt is built in the Neo-Renaissance style, while the Dreetörn-Hus, dating from 1733, is built in the Baroque style. These are just a few of the city's many impressive and interesting buildings.

Eider barrage

On the outskirts of Tønning in south-western Schleswig lies the Ejder Dam, which is quite a sight. When it was inaugurated in 1973, its purpose was to protect vulnerable land from storm surges. This was not least because of some severe flooding following a storm surge in 1962. At the same time, the dam was also intended to help regulate the water level in the River Ejderen. St. Peter-Ording

Explore the village of St. Peter-Ording in North Frisia, where you'll find 12 kilometers of paradise-like sandy beach, woodlands and large dunes. The area has been inhabited since the Viking Age and is a very popular excursion destination.

Friedrichstadt

Friedrichstadt looks very much like a typical Dutch canal town. That's why this romantic little town is called "Little Amsterdam". The town was built by the Dutch in 1621, where the rivers Ejderen and Treene flow together. Picturesque serrated gables and beautiful facades are reflected in the canals, and the houses are filled with carvings on doors and windows. The Dutch emblazoned the winding streets of the town, which intersect.

Husum

Enjoy a cheap mini break or maybe just a weekend stay in the small port town of Husum in northern Germany, where you can enjoy a maritime atmosphere. Walk along the city's Kulturpfad, which takes you past 32 of the city's most important historical and architectural sites.
