Svendborg

Svendborg is located in the south of Funen and is a maritime city with about 28,000 inhabitants. Svendborg's history goes back more than 750 years and the historic town centre invites you to stroll through the narrow streets and cosy courtyards surrounded by half-timbered houses. Svendborg is the second largest city on Funen, after Odense, and here you will find a good selection of shops, restaurants and cafés.

Svendborg is located on the Svendborg Sound near the Svendborg Sound Bridge, which connects Funen with the island of Tåsinge. From Svendborg Harbour you can take the ferry to Ærø, Drejø, Skarø, Hjortø or Birkholm if you want to visit the small islands in the South Funen Archipelago.

Svendborg is, due to its good location by the sea, a renowned shipping town, and there are still today several shipping companies in the city. In fact, Denmark's largest company originated in Svendborg when Captain Peter Mærsk Møller and his son Arnold Peter Møller bought a second-hand steamship in 1904 and formed A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg. In 2003, the company was renamed A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S, which is known throughout most of the world.

Valdemar Castle

Explore Valdemars Castle on Tåsinge near Svendborg. The magnificent castle was built under Christian IV around the middle of the 17th century and has now been turned into a castle and manor museum. The owners of the castle, who have reached the 12th generation, also live in the castle. Guests are free to wander among the old furniture and paintings in the many magnificent rooms and lounges and be impressed by the large halls. In addition to the castle, there is also a Hunting and Trophy Museum on the grounds. Throughout the year, the area around Valdemars Castle is also used for events such as markets and concerts.

Naturama

Naturama is Svendborg's zoological museum, which opened way back in 1935. It houses exhibitions on various themes such as "Giants of the Sea", where you can see some impressive whale skeletons. The exhibits consist mainly of skeletons and stuffed animals, but you can also see live animals such as walking sticks, red ants and various wheel spinners such as the crossed spider.

Egeskov Castle

Faaborg

The cosy market town of Faaborg is located on Faaborg Fjord in the south of Funen and has about 7000 inhabitants. Take a walk through the cosy streets and see the well-preserved old houses. From the harbour in Faaborg there are ferry connections to several islands in the South Funen archipelago such as Bjørnø, Lyø, Avernakø and Ærø. These interesting islands are like pearls on a string and are certainly worth a visit.

Nyborg

The South Funen Archipelago

The South Funen Archipelago is the shallow waters south of Funen, home to more than 55 islands, islets and islets. A fine ferry system enables transport between the inhabited islands, where some of the islanders live mainly from farming, some fishing or commuting to jobs on the "mainland".

A good way to experience the South Funen archipelago is by hiking along the Øhavsstien, which at 220 km is one of Denmark's longest hiking routes. The Øhavsstien is a marked trail system from Faldsled in the west to Langeland in the east and Ærø in the south.

Andersen's house functions as a museum and the exhibitions tell about the poet's life from his childhood years as a poor cobbler's son, his difficult time in Copenhagen and about his debut, writing career, old age and death.
