Mariager Fjord

Viking Centre Fyrkat

The castle no longer exists, but the ramparts that mark the town's size can still be seen. Behind the rampart 16 longhouses were built, which are today marked with white stones and just outside the rampart a faithful replica of a longhouse measuring almost 29 metres in length and built entirely of oak has been built.

The archaeological finds excavated around the castle and at the graves can be seen at Hobro Museum. Rold Skov

Rold Skov is Denmark's largest forest. With its 8000 hectares, it offers plenty of experiences of various kinds. Of course, the forest offers a lot of nice hikes, for example around the lake Store Økssø. Rold Skov is a true mecca for MTB riders, as there are routes of varying difficulty and length. Horse riding in the vast forest is also popular. There is also a wonderful nature playground, Røverknolden, which invites you to play and have fun.

In the old days it could be quite dangerous to visit the place. Legendary robbers such as Bette Fanden, Long Ajes, Lorentz Nielsen and Petronillen kept a sharp eye on the inn, and when guests on their way home passed through Rold Skov, the robbers would strike. But thankfully the robberies in the forest are a thing of the past and today only the legend lives on, along with the beautiful statues commemorating the four robbers.

World map

Go on a cheap car holiday in Denmark and visit the World Map at Hobro. One day, some meadows were to be drained near Klejtrup Lake, south of Hobro, and a stone appeared that looked like Jutland. This prompted Søren Poulsen, a dancing cameraman, to build his own little world in the meadows. The new world was built between 1944 and 1969 and measures 45 x 90 metres. It was built by placing large stones on top of the frozen meadows and in the places where the worlds were to be. When the ice melted, the stones could be tilted into place with some difficulty. The equator is marked with red poles and the whole world map is reproduced with lakes, rivers and famous mountain ranges, so it's easy to send mum and dad to Australia, Borneo or Mount Everest if they want to. There's also an 18-hole mini-golf course on the World Map and in summer it's a great place to enjoy a sail in the Pacific Ocean, where even the little ones can join in, although there may be a few waves. Thingbæk Lime Mines

The famous Thingbæk Limestone Mines opened to visitors in 1935 and is probably one of Denmark's most distinctive underground museums. It is here that Anders Bundgaard exhibits his plaster figures. Put on some warm clothes and start your journey into the dark and chilly mine galleries and enjoy the majestic limestone caves that seem to appear all of a sudden.

At Thingbæk Møllegaard, lime has been mined for several generations, but it was not until 1926 that a mine was actually established, where lime was mined until 1960. However, the unprofitable production of lime had to give way to market forces.
