Castel del Piano

Visit the small, cosy town of Castel del Piano, a Tuscan village. The town is beautifully situated on a hilltop overlooking the Tuscan countryside. The old town, with its town gates and walls, is completely intact. Here you will also find medieval laundry houses, narrow streets/alleys, picturesque doorways and windows and an incredible atmosphere at night.

The special yellow lighting helps to enhance the cosy evening atmosphere throughout the town, especially in the main square with the 2 fountains in front of the town hall. In the evening, young and old gather in the town squares and small squares. People chat, play chess, watch football, drink wine and watch the day's events unfold in the bars and cafés. You can enjoy a cup of espresso or sambucca on a warm summer evening and experience all this fantastic atmosphere. A little tip if you are going out to eat is to watch the locals and see where they go to eat. It's often both cheaper and better here.

Monte Amiata

The mountain is of volcanic origin and the only one of its kind in Tuscany. The 1738-metre-high mountain lies in an older limestone and sandstone area. It has a particular and varied flora and fauna. The mountain is covered with deciduous trees, especially chestnut trees. All around the mountain are huge lava blocks, ejected from the volcano during eruptions in the past, which give the area a very special character. On the way up the mountain there are various food stalls and souvenir shops. Monte Amiata is a great place to ski in winter.

Bagni di San Filippo

Chianciano Terme

Montepulciano

The wine town Montepulciano is definitely worth a visit. Built on a narrow volcanic ridge this town is one of Tuscany's highest medieval towns. A visit to one of Tuscany's most famous wine towns should include a sample tasting at the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Grotte di Castro

Grotte, or 'cave' in Italian, refers to the many caves in the rock where the town is built and ´di Castro´ refers to the Duke of Castro, who ruled the town in the 16th century. Grotte di Castro is a charming little town with a long and interesting history.

One of the many things the town is famous for is its 'Sagra della Patata', or potato festival, a true food festival dedicated to the products that have been traditionally grown in the area. A gastronomic festival that certainly also attracts many food-loving tourists - the potato festival is held in August.

The Etruscan cemeteries, La Pianezza and Vigna La Piazza, dating back to between the 7th and 5th centuries BC, are located just outside the city, but the Church of San Pietro is not. Dating from around 1118, it was rebuilt in 1739 and has a Baroque high altar and also houses the tomb of Cardinal Carlo Salotti. Palazzo Comunale, supposedly designed by the architect Vignola , today houses the Museo Archeologico e delle Tradizioni Popolari with Etruscan finds from the cemeteries, an exciting historical experience.

Lake Bolsena
