Gråsten

The cosy South Jutland town of Gråsten has about 4,000 inhabitants and is close to Flensburg Fjord. The town has been built around Gråsten Castle, which is the town's main attraction. The castle was built in the 1500s and is a Danish hunting castle. Today it is used as the summer residence of Queen Margrethe II.

The charming town is idyllically situated in the South Jutland countryside and there are good opportunities for cycling and walking in the green countryside. In the town you will find several cosy cafés and restaurants as well as good shopping opportunities.

Gråsten Castle, Castle Garden and Castle Church

Gråsten Castle was built in the 1500s and is a Danish hunting lodge.

Gråsten Castle Church is the only part of Gråsten Castle that is open to visitors.

Gråsten Palace Garden is an English-inspired landscape garden. In summer, visitors can enjoy the large rose and perennial beds, which radiate in a multitude of colours, and there is an outdoor exhibition that tells about the development of the castle garden.

Cathrinesminde Brickwork

Kruså

For many years, Kruså was the only border crossing into Germany. Kupfermühle

Kupfermühle is a small historic town with about 1600 inhabitants. In the 1600s Christian IV founded a copper mill here, which grew into one of the largest businesses in the area. It produced copper plates for large buildings and copper utensils. The copper mill was in use until 1962 and today you can visit the Museum Kupfermühle, which bears witness to the industry. Please note that the museum has limited opening hours. Get more freedom to explore on a self-drive holiday. There are also plenty of great opportunities for an active holiday in the Kupfermühle area. History Centre Dybbøl Banke

Dybbøl Mill

Dybbøl Mill, located in Southern Denmark, is a museum deeply rooted in the Danish-German conflict of 1864. Sønderborg Castle

Better known as Christian II's prison.

The castle from the 13th century was one of the strongest castles of the kingdom in the Middle Ages. In the 1550s it was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle. The palace church, Queen Dorothea's Chapel, is one of Europe's few preserved lighthouse churches from the Reformation period and Denmark's oldest Renaissance-style interior.

The castle's most famous occupant was Christian II, who was deposed and imprisoned in the castle in 1532-1549. As a princely prisoner, he was treated according to his high rank and had several rooms in Sønderborg Castle at his disposal. He also had a small servants' quarters and his own cook, who prepared a good diet for him.

Today the castle houses the Museum of the History and Culture of Southern Jutland.
