Roskilde

Roskilde is a city filled with activities, history, shopping and much more for the whole family. Roskilde Cathedral is a fantastic attraction in the city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral has been the burial place of kings and queens for centuries. The city is also known for its music festival: Roskilde festival, which takes place in June/July at the animal show square.

The Museum of the Viking Ships

Stevns Lighthouse Centre

North of Stevnsfortet is Stevns Fyr, built 1877-78. There is also an old one in the area dating back to 1816, but it is no longer active. In the former lighthouse keeper's house you can see an exhibition about the two lighthouses and the nature along Stevns Klint. The area around Stevns Lighthouse was part of the Copenhagen Air Defence during the Cold War. Go up to the 27-metre high new lighthouse and enjoy the magnificent view.

Stevns Klint

Discover Stevns Klint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautiful and unique area is where scientists discovered why dinosaurs and half the world's animal species were wiped out 66 million years ago when Earth was hit by an asteroid. The steep coastal cliff is about 17 km long and offers a 21 km hiking trail, known as the "Trampestien", which passes through Boesdal limestone quarry.

Arken Museum of Modern Art

Book a cheap mini break and get plenty of culture in the bargain with a visit to the ARKEN Art Museum, located at Køge Bugt Strandpark, south of Copenhagen. ARKEN has one of Scandinavia's finest collections of contemporary art, but the architecture of the museum itself has also won international acclaim since it opened in 1996. The collection contains over 400 works by Nordic and international contemporary artists, covering the period 1990 up to the present day. ARKEN also houses one of Europe's most sought-after collections of Damian Hirst, alongside works by Asger Jorn and the abstract Anselm Reyle, as well as Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. So enjoy a cheap weekend break from Risskov south of Copenhagen and get one up on both the experience and the culture!

ZOO, Copenhagen

With over 3,000 animals in over 264 exciting species, Frederiksberg Zoo is always an experience in a class of its own. Take the tour of the 'Arctic Ring' and get up close to the animals that live in the cold regions of the Arctic Circle. Meet the polar bears and seals, both under and above water. Also visit the famous Elephant House, considered one of the best in the world. In the Children's Zoo, the little ones are catered for, petting the dwarf goats and watching the farm animals being fed at close quarters. The Tropezoo is filled with snakes, crocodiles, pygmy deer, birds and lots of beautiful butterflies that thrive in the beautifully landscaped rainforest.

The zoo at Frederiksberg is a small peaceful oasis in the middle of the otherwise busy city, which guarantees great experiences for both young and old who love animals.

Copenhagen

Try a car holiday in Denmark and discover the capital Copenhagen at your own pace on a family self-drive holiday. There's plenty to see, so be sure to arrange a cheap hotel stay with us beforehand. Then you can get started exploring the Danish capital. Firstly, make sure you stop by one of Denmark's landmarks; The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid is the biggest tourist attraction in Denmark and one of the most photographed statues in the world. Walking past Amalienborg is also a must on your trip to Copenhagen. Christiansborg, the Round Tower and Rosenborg are among other sights to pass by. Of course, you should also take a stroll along Strøget, which starts at Rådhuspladsen and continues down to Kongens Nytorv. Here, shopping opportunities abound. If you continue across Kongens Nytorv, you'll come to Nyhavn. Nyhavn is at once modern Copenhagen's most popular and vibrant meeting place and an attraction of historical importance. It is also possible to find cheap weekend breaks at Risskov, so take a summer or winter break and experience a self-drive holiday in the capital.

Christmas market in Roskilde

Set against a beautiful backdrop of historic medieval buildings, Roskilde's annual Christmas market is a must. Here you can be seduced by the smell of fir, mulled wine and roasted almonds, singing, music and elves and lots of cosy stalls. Not least the 800-year-old cathedral and the old town hall provide the backdrop for the atmospheric events when it's 'Christmas on Stændertorvet'.

The Christmas market in Roskilde is extremely charming and has a very special atmosphere in the historic setting of Stændertorvet in the city centre. It was a trading post as far back as the Viking Age and up through the Middle Ages, and it really creates a special atmosphere to walk around here. Take a pleasant stroll around the 20 or so stalls offering everything from pottery, jewellery, winter knitwear, toys, wooden crafts, Christmas decorations, decorations and beautiful handmade art. You will also find several places to warm your hands with a nice cup of hot mulled wine or cocoa and enjoy warm apple slices and delicate specialities. Around the town, the charming Christmas train runs, which the children love, and a couple of real reindeer also visit the town. Part of what makes Roskilde's Christmas market so cosy and special is that it doesn't actually seem very big. You get to know each other a bit and there are smiles on your face and twinkles in your eyes. It's nice and Danish - quiet, cosy and informal.

In the city's creative Musicon district, you can also experience the cosy indoor Christmas market, 'Alletiders Jul', where more than 60 stalls are set up. There are also various workshops and live entertainment.

Besides the Christmas market, Roskilde has an incredible amount of Danish history and you have a great opportunity to combine your Christmas market mini break with some sightseeing in the beautiful town. For example, visit Roskilde Museum or the Viking Ship Museum, or take a walk into the 800-year-old UNESCO-listed Roskilde Cathedral. You'll also find plenty of more traditional shopping opportunities, both in the pedestrian streets of the city centre and in the large shopping centre, RO's Torv, which houses more than 80 shops and restaurants.

Copenhagen is one of those cities where you never know what time of year it is: In spring, love is in the air and people from all walks of life slowly spread out in the city's gardens and parks. In summer, there's singing and smiling in the streets, big ice cream cones, beach life on Amager and a party atmosphere in Nyhavn. And in autumn, the smell of wet asphalt and the city's greenery are replaced by beautiful shades of red, brown and orange. And it's safe to say that Christmas is certainly no exception. As Christmas approaches, Copenhagen transforms into a magical cityscape of twinkling lights, grand decorations, garlands and hearts. Tivoli puts on the long lights, the D'angleterre building gets dressed up for Christmas and Kronprinsensgade is adorned with its beautiful ceiling of fairy lights. The unmistakable smell of Christmas sweets and the sound of choral singing and festive music waft through the air. Christmas in Copenhagen officially kicks off on the first Sunday of Advent when, after the big Christmas parade has made its way through the city, Santa Claus lights the big Christmas tree on Rådhuspladsen. Most of the city's Christmas markets, however, get a head start on the festivities and usually open around mid-November.

One of the city's most popular Christmas markets is of course Tivoli's classic Christmas market. In addition to the stunning lightscapes in the garden, you will find more than 50 different stalls with everything between heaven and earth. However, it should be mentioned that it costs 200 DKK to visit the Tivoli exhibition and market.

The large and traditional Christmas market on Højbro Square, also known as "Deutsch's Julemarked", is free to experience. The market is set up by Michael Deutsch, in collaboration with the City of Copenhagen, and more than 280,000 Christmas lights provide the backdrop for the many stalls.

In Nyhavn, too, Christmas is on the agenda, complete with a fantastic seaside Christmas atmosphere with lights, open fires, mulled wine and apple slices and everything else that goes with it. You might even be lucky enough to see Carlsberg's old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage trundling past.

If the streets get a little too crowded and alarmed, you can regain your calm and cool with a trip up the Round Tower. Here you can get a fantastic view of the city's glittering lights and enjoy the Christmas spirit from a distance.

Another of the city's cosy Christmas markets is the charming and relatively new H.C. Andersen Christmas Market, located on Strøget in the heart of Copenhagen. Here you can meet Santa Claus, wild Vikings and H.C. himself. Andersen, warm your hands on a cup of nice hot mulled wine and eat traditional German charcoal-grilled sausages.
