Plön

When you arrive in Plön, the first thing you see is the beautiful castle: grand and snow-white, the beautiful building towers over the town. The Renaissance castle was built back in the 17th century and was the seat of the Dukes of Plön until 1761. In the 1800s, the castle was also the summer residence of Crown Prince Frederik, later Frederik VIII.

Lake tour in the Holsteinische Schweiz Nature Park

Take a boat tour of the Holsteinische Schweiz nature park in northern Germany. The tour is about 12 km long and takes you across the five lakes Dieksee, Langensee, Behlersee, Höftsee and Edebergsee in about two hours. The boats dock at Malente-Gremsmühlen, Niederkleveez, Timmdorf and Plön-Fegetasche. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and on board you can buy small snacks and drinks. Bad Malente

Go on a driving holiday in Germany and visit the Malente region, located in eastern Schleswig-Holstein and home to just over 10,000 inhabitants. Take a walk in the beautiful "Holstein Switzerland". You might pass the 24-metre-high Holzberg Tower, from where you can get a fantastic panoramic view over the two large lakes, Dieksee and Kellersee, on either side of the tower. An active holiday is on the cards, with many hikes to as many as five of the area's lakes. Or how about taking a lovely boat trip on the unique "5-Lakes-Fahrt". The boat trip starts at Dieksee, and offers a great opportunity to see a larger part of the region in a short time - even from a wonderful and refreshing angle.

Just around the Holzberg Tower and Dieksee you'll also find Bad Malente Wildpark; a protected and beautiful woodland area covering 12 hectares where you can see wild boar and deer, among other things. Access to the park is free.

Eutin

Eutin is a more than 1000 year old town, with several of the houses in the inner town more than 300 years old. The town's pedestrian market square is a natural centre of the town, where you can relax in one of the many cafés. From here you can go shopping in the pedestrian streets where you will find several shops. While you are in town, you should also visit the Eutin Castle, which is a museum today where you can have an interesting tour. You can also stop by the small spa park, where thousands of roses and rhododendrons adorn the grounds. Eutin is a great place to visit on a cheap self-drive holiday or cheap mini break in Germany. Just outside the town, you can also visit the hunting lodge at Ukleisee.

Lütjenburg

Go on a self-drive holiday in Northern Germany. More specifically, in the north-eastern part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Find cheap hotels in the area at Risskov and visit the small town of Lütjenburg with around 5,300 inhabitants. It is an old town, built in the 12th century.

The small town has a beautiful historic market square as well as a very nice baroque town hall, which together with St. Michael's Church, are the two places that should be visited. Hohwacht

Between Kiel and Lübeck in the untouched nature of the Baltic Sea lies Hohwacht surrounded by old beech forests, 127 km south of the Danish border. Hohwacht was once a small fishing village and although much has happened since, the town has still retained its character. This is the ideal place for a mini break or beach holiday with plenty of relaxation.

Hohwacht is a real seaside resort and you only have to walk a few minutes to reach the long promenade along the white sandy beach. The bright beach is more than 2 km long and here the whole family can enjoy lovely hours. The salt water has a lovely effect on body and soul and the beach is suitable for families with children. In summer there are lifeguards on the beach. There are also countless opportunities for various water sports activities. On the beach you will also find the traditional North German beach chairs.

Kiel

Kiel has plenty to offer all year round. In summer, the city and harbour are really lively and there are great opportunities for swimming. In winter, the city hosts one of northern Germany's most popular Christmas markets, transforming the town square into a fairytale Christmas village. And at other times of the year, it's a great place for sightseeing, with everything from the 2. World War II history to the beautiful botanical gardens. Located on the Kielerfjord, Germany's largest ferry port is in Kiel, where maritime atmosphere and city life combine beautifully. Kiel is also one of the most popular shopping cities on the Baltic Sea with plenty of exciting boutiques. Take a stroll through the Old Town, where you can see St Nicholas' Church on Alter Markt with Ernst Barlach's figure of the Geistkämpfer. It's also worth visiting the Maritime Museum, housed in an old fish hall, and seeing the historic ships in the Museum Harbour.

Schoenberg

Schönberg is best known for its two cosy beach districts, California and Brazil. Besides the lovely California Beach, which offers everything from water sports and swimming to mini golf, you will also find an exciting museum in Schönberg; the "Kindheitsmuseum", which is a different kind of toy museum. Through documents, toys, teddy bears and dolls, among other things, you will get an insight into childhood as it was over 100 years ago. It is fun for both children and adults to see.

Go on a pleasant evening excursion to Kiel lighthouse by ship. The tour starts from the 250 metre long pier, "Schönberger Seebrücke". On the pleasant trip, which takes about 2 hours, you are offered delicious dinner from the grill. The evening excursion from Schönberger Seebrücke to Kiel Lighthouse is possible in the summer months (July and September). The tours usually take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Lübeck

Christmas market in Kiel

Kiel's annual Christmas markets are inspired by the city's surroundings and history as a maritime coastal town, and are extremely popular with Danish Christmas tourists. The short distance and the city's immense charm and beauty make Kiel an obvious choice for a convenient self-drive holiday with a mini break or a weekend break during Christmas. The city hosts four different Christmas markets, which light up the squares and streets with lots of stalls, music, fun and delicious Christmas treats.

A Christmas tree forest of 3,000m² with some 500 trees is erected on the large town hall square, which, together with the many colourful huts, creates a fairytale Christmas village. Here you will find crafts, delicacies, mulled wine and food huts and much more. Taste this year's exclusive mulled wine, created by the Anselmann winery from the Palatinate wine region in collaboration with the organisers. This mulled wine is based on one exquisite grape variety and can't be found anywhere else - not even at the other markets in town!

At Holstensplatz, the many stalls create an intimate atmosphere where you can buy woollen clothes, amber jewellery and local culinary delights. This Christmas market has existed since 1973 and in 2018 presented a completely new design with new stalls and a new and creative lighting concept.

You can also visit the Altenmarkt Christmas Market in the Old Town around St. Nikolai Church, which has its own Alpine-inspired Christmas atmosphere and traditional punch and food stalls.

Between the markets on the Town Hall Square and Holstenplatz, you'll find the beautiful market on Asmus-Bremer-Platz. Here, the 12.5-metre high, 4-storey Christmas pyramid adorns the square. The inspiration comes from the Erzgebirge and together with the sweet angels, the baby Jesus and the holy three kings, it helps to set the atmosphere of the cosy square.

From mid-November, the annual Kiel Ice Festival is also held, where ice skating and fun can be had in style.

Christmas market in Neumünster

Only 100 km from the Danish-German border, you can experience Neumünster's Christmas market. Here you can fill up on Christmas cheer, buy Christmas gifts and eat your fill of Christmas treats. In the streets and alleys of the city, under the dark December sky, you will find wonderful experiences for both big and small Christmas hearts.

In Neumünster you will find from the end of November until Christmas Eve one of the cosiest Christmas markets in Schleswig-Holstein. With brilliant Christmas lights, an ice skating lake and delicious stalls selling Christmas treats, Neumünster is a wonderful December destination. You'll also find traditional crafts such as ceramics and woodcarving, as well as various Christmas events on the weekends for both young and old Christmas lovers.

At just over 100 km from the Kruså border, Neumünster's Christmas spirit is within reasonable driving distance. The town also offers lovely restaurants, good shopping and many old buildings that look extra nice in the decorated Christmas lights.

The Christmas market in Lübeck is extremely traditional and includes numerous stalls, entertainment and activities, Glühwein huts, almond men, marzipan tents and much more. Officially, there are seven Christmas markets in Lübeck, each with its own unique charm. But in fact, you could say that the city transforms into one big enchanting Christmas market, branching out across large parts of the city. The biggest of these, however, has to be the historic Christmas market near the town hall and the beautiful Marienkirche. Here you are in the heart of the old city centre, surrounded by countless buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. Christmas markets were already held here around 350 years ago. But it wasn't quite so idyllic then - you had to hoard food to last the winter.

The large network of Christmas markets is extremely diverse and stretches from the city centre and out towards the Trave River in several directions. Take a pleasant stroll around the beautiful maritime surroundings and visit one of the various arts and crafts markets, such as the beautiful crafts market at St. Peter's Church, stop by the family market on the banks of the Trave River or take a stroll to the beautiful illuminated ice rink located just outside Holstentor. Also visit the exciting arts and crafts market in Heiligen Geist Hospital, where many different artists from near and far showcase some of their beautiful works - be it ceramics, woodwork or textiles.
