Haga

Enjoy a holiday by car to Haga, one of the oldest areas in Gothenburg with well-preserved cosy wooden houses, so-called "Landshøvdingehuse". Today Haga is in the centre of Gothenburg, but it all started when the Swedish Queen Kristina ordered the masses to be moved, and so Haga became a fact.

If you just want to walk around the city and sniff the atmosphere, then a visit to Haga is highly recommended. Here you'll find a milliner, the independent toy shop and plenty of antique shops. Buy some homemade marzipan, soap from the archipelago or go on a treasure hunt in the fashion shops that are not to be found in the shopping centres.

The charming neighbourhood is filled with eateries and interesting little shops. The area lies between Vasa and Linné, which meet the main street Haga Nygata at both ends.

Don't forget to take a break, there are plenty of places to eat for lunch or just a coffee.

In December there is also a Christmas market, and in spring and autumn the farm market may be open.

Operaen i Göteborg

The modern Gothenburg Opera, located on Lilla Bommen in the harbor, was inaugurated in 1994. Operas, musicals and ballets follow each other. The architect behind the modern creation is Jan Izikowitz and the building is inspired by the world of opera, but also has a maritime feel.

Gothenburg Art Museum

It doesn't hurt to start by saying that Gothenburg Art Museum has three stars in the Michelin Guide. The museum houses perhaps the world's finest collection of National Romantic art signed in the 19th century by Scandinavians including Edvard Munch, Anders Zorn, P. S. Krøyer and Carl Larsson.

Gothenburg Art Museum is located on Götaplatsen, the city's high-culture centre, just a stone's throw from the theatre and concert hall where Sweden's national orchestra is based.

The Paddan Boats

Find a cheap holiday in Sweden at Risskov and get away on adventures in Gothenburg. A great way to experience the city is to take a guided tour on the Paddan boats and see Gothenburg from the water. The Paddan boats are hop-on-hop-off boats that take you around the canal system and harbour. The boats are available in the warmer seasons, but there are also special departures around Christmas.

Take your children or children at heart on a visit to Universeum. It's a perfect place to spend the day exploring the various science exhibits, some of Europe's largest aquariums, experimentarium and an entire rainforest!

Universeum is located in the centre of Gothenburg and is the largest science centre in the Nordic countries, with 7 floors.

The Botanical Garden in Gothenburg

The excellent botanical garden in Gothenburg is a paradise for garden lovers The garden already opened in 1923, and is one of the largest of its kind. There you can enjoy 175 hectares of plants, both in the open air and in the many greenhouses. Take a look at the garden's collection of tropical orchids, carnivorous plants and the rare Easter Island tree, which is extinct in its natural habitat. Take a walk in the rock garden and enjoy the scent of the herb garden. More than half a million people visit this beautiful park every year, making it one of Sweden's most popular visitor destinations.

The East Indiaman Gothenburg

This ship is the world's largest active wooden ship. The ship is a replica of the East India Farer, which sank just outside the entrance to Gothenburg on its return from China in 1745. Although a replica, it has been to India and on several expeditions around Europe.

In 2010, the ship took part in the festivities surrounding Crown Princess Victoria's wedding.

Bohus fortress

Go on a lovely self-drive holiday to Sweden. Find a cheap one north of Gothenburg and visit Bohus fortress, which is more than 700 years old. A visit here is exciting for both children and adults. Christmas market in Liseberg

The Liseberg Christmas Market in Gothenburg is the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. Every year, the amusement park in the centre of Gothenburg is transformed into a true Christmas adventure, where millions of twinkling lights, Christmas trees and rides attract people from all over the Nordic countries. The magical and authentic atmosphere is best compared to Tivoli in Copenhagen.

Liseberg Christmas Market is divided into different sections under the themes, Winterland, Christmas with the Rabbits, Santa's Workshop, Lapland, Traditional Christmas Market and Medieval Village.

Inside the park you can explore the 70 stalls where you can buy crafts and enjoy local delights such as herring, Lapland reindeer meat and hot mulled wine, while the kids enjoy the myriad of fun activities.
