Flensburg

Flensburg is a lively port city with a rich cultural life and a varied shopping offer, which is all too often overlooked. Many Danes simply cross the border for soft drinks and tobacco without taking a closer look at Flensburg, which is a shame as the city really has something to offer.

Flensburg has an interesting history, beautiful buildings and good places to eat. The city was one of the few in northern Germany not to be destroyed during the Second World War, so you'll find many historic buildings from all stylistic periods. The historic city centre, which is influenced by Danish and German building culture, is a living testimony to Flensburg's 700-year history.

Flensburg is an old seafaring town built around the natural harbour at the end of Flensburg Fjord. Today the harbour is a lively area with plenty of eateries, museums and ships. The port is also steeped in history, which you can learn more about at the maritime museum, where all the texts are in English. It's clear everywhere that Flensburg has been under the Danish crown for a full 400 years. For example, many street names in the city are Danish.

Flensburg really is a paradise for anyone who likes to shop. Rotestrasse has about 500 shops with favourable prices for Danes. You'll also find several cosy back alleys and alleyways, which are particularly popular at Christmas time. Holmen with its beautiful old town houses is the pedestrian meeting point with several of the city's department stores.

Nordermarkt

Nordermarkt is a lovely area in Flensburg. Take a stroll through the cosy cobbled streets, browse the many shops or enjoy a drink in one of the lovely cafés. Nordermarkt is the perfect area for those who like to shop in boutiques, look at beautiful architecture or just enjoy the lovely atmosphere.

Phänomenta

Phänomenta in Lüdenscheid is a science and experience museum that celebrates over 25 years of sparking curiosity across all ages. With around 200 interactive stations, it encourages hands-on exploration of scientific phenomena, making it a fascinating destination for families, educators, and anyone keen on discovering the wonders of science through play. Highlights include engaging with humanoid robots and experiencing the science behind everyday phenomena. It's a place where both children and adults can rekindle their sense of wonder and inquiry.

Sankt Nikolai-kyrkan

The St. Nikolai Church was first built in the 14th century but due to a fire in the late 15th century, the church was replaced by an older church on the same site. The church is the main church of German Flensburg and its interesting history and beautiful architecture make it well worth a visit.

Kupfermühle

Kupfermühle is a small historic town with about 1600 inhabitants. In the 1600s Christian IV founded a copper mill here, which grew into one of the largest businesses in the area. It produced copper plates for large buildings and copper utensils. The copper mill was in use until 1962 and today you can visit the Museum Kupfermühle, which bears witness to the industry. Please note that the museum has limited opening hours. Get more freedom to explore on a self-drive holiday. There are also plenty of great opportunities for an active holiday in the Kupfermühle area. Kruså

Explore Southern Denmark and visit the historic town of Kruså. It was here that the German troops in 1940 moved across the border to Denmark, and today you can drive across the historic border and take advantage of advantageous border trade. For many years, Kruså was the only border crossing into Germany. At Møllesøen in Kruså, you can watch the town's watermill from outside and walk around the lake in the beautiful Tunneldal, which was created during the Ice Age. Sankelmark Lake

The 1.6 km long and 500 m wide Sankelmark Lake is located in northern South Schleswig. In 1864, this beautiful lake was the setting for a small battle against Austrian troops, which the Danish soldiers lost badly. The Danish troops were retreating from their positions in Dannevirke, about 30 km south of there, when they were attacked by Austrian artillery. After a few hours, 431 Austrian and 952 Danish soldiers had lost their lives. Today, memorials to the Danish, Prussian and Austrian dead can be found near Sankelmark Lake.
