Schwerin Castle

Schwerin Castle is located in the city centre on a small island between the lakes Schweriner See and Burgersee. The castle is open to visitors and you can visit the castle museum or take a stroll in the castle garden. Nearby, these sights are particularly recommended: the Statliches Museum, the Siegessaüle, the Altes Palais, the historic Marstall stable building and the classical State Chancellery.

Every year in July and August the magnificent Castle Festival is held, a festival for opera enthusiasts where productions by Puccini, Verdi and others are staged in stunning settings and attract tens of thousands of guests to Schwerin.

Visit Schwerin

The town is beautifully set in picturesque surroundings with the lakes in the middle of the town surrounded by forests. Schwerin is the capital of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The lakes play a major role in Schwerin, and the city has given its name to the lovely Schweriner See, which at 61 km2, is one of Germany's largest lakes.

Bathing beach Schwerin

Schwerin is the capital of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Schwerin is particularly well known for its lovely bathing beaches which are not far from the city centre in the cosy district of Zippendorf, and are also a good choice on a hot summer's day. Schwerin Zoo

Schwerin Zoo offers a diverse and engaging experience for visitors of all ages. The zoo is home to over 1,500 animals representing 150 species, including lions, giraffes, and red pandas. The zoo also features a tropical house where visitors can explore the lush habitats of exotic birds and reptiles. Lewitz

Güstrow

The old town of Güstrow is home to the old Renaissance castle, Güstrow Castle, which also graces the townscape. The impressive castle was built back in 1589 and was used as the residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Also visit the cathedral, which was built in Gothic style between 1226 and 1335. The cathedral is also on the "European Route of Brick Gothic" and so the famous work, "The Floating Angel, by the sculptor Ernst Barlach, can also be seen in the impressive brick cathedral.

Water Art

At the southeast end of the square is the spectacular fountain, or water art as it is called. The fountain, in the Dutch Renaissance style, was built from 1579-1602 to plans by Phillipp Brandin of Utrecht.

The 12 limestone columns support a beautiful copper roof, topped by a hexagonal lantern. Until 1897, the well supplied drinking and service water to around 220 households through wooden water pipes.

Wismar

Wismar is one of the old Hanseatic towns, and here you will find, in addition to the historic town centre, the old medieval harbour, which is largely intact. The town is characterised by many impressive merchants' houses, many of which have characteristic jagged gables facing the street.

See the old harbour, St. George and St. Mary's church. In 2002, the historic parts of Wismar were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In the centre of Wismar is the beautiful market square, which at 10,000 m2 is one of the largest in northern Germany. Adjacent to the square are a number of state buildings, including the town hall. The large and beautifully restored town hall cellar houses the exhibition "Bilder einer Stadt", which describes the development of the town over time.

Neustadt-Glewe

The most exciting thing about Neustad-Glewe is exploring the town on your own. Take a stroll around the old town and enjoy the influence the Baroque had on the town's layout and especially its buildings. Start with the castle, der Alte Burg, which is an old castle dating back to the 13th century. The castle has been restored several times. The castle also has its own restaurant, the Burg, which is a popular place to eat in the town with a lovely terrace that is also an ideal place to rest - both for your legs and your palate, should you get thirsty.
