Eider barrage

On the outskirts of Tønning in south-western Schleswig lies the Ejder Dam, which is quite a sight. When it was inaugurated in 1973, its purpose was to protect vulnerable land from storm surges. This was not least because of some severe flooding following a storm surge in 1962. At the same time, the dam was also intended to help regulate the water level in the River Ejderen. Büsum

Go on a beach holiday to Büsum for a real family holiday. Büsum is a very visited town and numerous tourists come year after year to the town. Find a cheap holiday at Risskov and drive to Büsum. Not many people know that just 400 years ago the town was located on an island - in the middle of the Wadden Sea. Only towards the end of the 1500s did Büsum become landlocked as a result of natural land reclamation. From the idyllic harbour it is only a few metres to the "Grünstrand" with its many beach curves and resting zones. The red and white striped lighthouse is the landmark of the spa town of Büsum. The spa town is also known for shrimping, walks by the Wadden Sea and a grassy beach. The romantic harbour is full of life and you can enjoy the atmosphere here. Pirate Sea

Piratenmeer is a fantastic water park in Büsum, with plenty of experiences to tempt people of all ages. In other words, Piratenmeer is a sure hit with the whole family.

Friedrichstadt

Friedrichstadt looks very much like a typical Dutch canal town. That's why this romantic little town is called "Little Amsterdam". The town was built by the Dutch in 1621, where the rivers Ejderen and Treene flow together. Picturesque serrated gables and beautiful facades are reflected in the canals, and the houses are filled with carvings on doors and windows. The Dutch emblazoned the winding streets of the town, which intersect.

Heath

Heide is known for the largest uninhabited marketplace in Germany, where they have the popular Wochenmarkt every Saturday morning/afternoon. Go on a self-drive holiday to Heide and enjoy a nice day, where you can even go to the market and get yourself some bargains. You can find just about anything and also traditional items from the area.

It's also a good idea to take a walk in Heide and take a closer look at some of the town's fine buildings. Walk past the Church of St Jürgen, which was restored after a fire in 1560. Also walk past the old rectory, which is just opposite the church and was built back in 1739. The Postelheim on Südermarkt is built in the Neo-Renaissance style, while the Dreetörn-Hus, dating from 1733, is built in the Baroque style. These are just a few of the city's many impressive and interesting buildings.

Christmas market in Heide

18th November to 23rd December 2025

The Christmas Market in Heide is held at the Südermarkt Square in Heide, and is filled with cosy stalls and entertainment. For example, Santa Claus comes by every Sunday to greet the children. From Germany's largest Christmas market square, Heide's Christmas market spreads out into the town. The many stalls offer a wide range of Christmas specialities, such as mulled wine and pretzels, as well as a large selection of Christmas gift ideas.
