Hohe Tauern National Park Carinthia

The Hohe Tauern National Park offers one of the most impressive alpine natural scenarios that cannot be easily matched anywhere else in the world. The highest mountain in Austria, Großglockner, impresses with its 3,798 metres and Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps, is also a magnificent sight and testifies to the mighty forces of nature that move valleys and make mountains. Beautiful waterfalls such as Fallbach in Malta or Jungfernsprung in Heiligenblut are sought-after tourist destinations, and there are also plenty of cultural monuments such as the famous Apriacher Stockmühlen.

Climbing park High ropes course

High above the forest floor, Tyrol’s high ropes courses offer a thrilling escape for explorers big and small. At places like Kletterwald Bichlbach in the sports and leisure park, you’ll navigate through six courses packed with more than 60 suspended challenges—think rope slides, sky trapezes, and spider web nets. Designed for all abilities, including kids aged 5 and up, the courses provide gear and a safety briefing before you climb into the canopy.

Heiligenblut on the Grossglockner

Beautiful town at the foot of Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, which towers over the town. The town itself lies at 1,288 metres above sea level, and this is where the famous Grossglocker-Hochalpenstrasse passes through. The town is famous for its impressive 15th-century church and a cheap car holiday here is highly recommended to enjoy the magnificent surroundings.

The name Heiligenblut (Holy Blood) comes from the famous legend of the bottle of Christ's blood. It was the Danish prince Briccius who brought this bottle back from Constantinople in the year 914. The bottle had been hidden in his wound in the calf to protect it from robbers. But an avalanche put an end to the transport, and the prince was buried by the snow. But three ears of corn grew on the same spot, and some peasants subsequently found his body. But when they went to bury him, the leg refused to stay underground. The bone was examined and the bottle of Christ's blood was recovered and later stored in the sacrament house of the Church of Saint Vinzinz. The town built its own crypt and an altar to Briccius, but due to lack of evidence, Briccius was never canonised.

Jungfernsprung

Jungfernsprung is close to Heiligenlbut in the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria, and with an impressive 130-metre drop it's easy to spot from the road. There is a path that leads through the forest up to the edge of the waterfall.

The name of the waterfall comes from a local legend which says that a virgin was pursued by a devil and to escape the grim fate that awaited her, she jumped over the cliff but was then rescued by an angel on the line who then gently placed her in the valley, the waterfall then marking where the incident had taken place. Well worth a visit on a driving holiday around Austria.

Großglockner

Großglockner is Austria's highest mountain in the Alps and has a height of 3,798 metres. The magnificent mountain is located on the border between the two states of Carinthia and Tyrol in the Glocknergruppe, part of the Hohe Tauern mountain range.

Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse

One option if you want to enjoy the impressive mountains is to head to Fusch. From here you can take the hairpin turn on the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse panoramic road. On this tour you will reach an altitude of around 2000 meters and you can enjoy the stunning panoramic views throughout the tour.

Customs Tower in Winklern

For almost 700 years, the 'toll tower' in Winklern has served as a defence and lookout tower for the town and in the old days also secured the trade routes south across the Tauern towards Salzburg. Today it hosts an interesting exhibition on crystals.

It is said that a friendly dragon, also known as the 'tower gnome', has lived in the tower from the very beginning and guards the very precious treasure that the valley hides, namely water.

The Time Factory

The Time Factory in Lainach is an entertaining visit to the more than 400 square metre exhibition that takes its visitors on a journey through time, from prehistoric times towards the future. In particular, it is a historical journey through figures, frescoes, vaults and rooms from the past but also an insight into the very evolution of man.

In addition to the Time Factory, there is also an exhibition of impressive historical folk costumes.

Mölltal Glacier Carinthia

This glacier ski area offers skiing on the glacier all year round, 3112 metres above sea level. In winter there are a total of 17 ski runs of varying difficulty. There are also a variety of lifts, ranging from the Anchor Lift to the Mölltal Glacier Express. In the snow park there are moguls, sharp turns and jumps for the more advanced skiers. Of course, there's also a ski school for the less experienced. In other words, the area is good for all levels.

Cross-country skiing is also available in the area.
