Magdeburg

destination

Magdeburg with its amazing history and beautiful green areas, old town and wonderful atmosphere, is a beautiful city is well worth a visit. Magdeburg has had its fair share of history. During the Thirty Years War, the city was almost completely destroyed. It was a religious war that played out between Catholics and Protestants in the Holy Roman Empire. The war started with the Bohemian uprising in 1618 and ended in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia. A little under three hundred years later, it was all over again and once again Magdeburg was reduced to a smoking heap of ashes during the Allied bombing campaigns towards the end of the Second World War. But the city managed to recover and even survived the GDR era. In 1989, Magdeburg began to spread its wings again, rising like a phoenix from the ashes, and today it is once again a modern metropolis with so much to offer. So why not take a cheap self-drive holiday with Risskov to Magdeburg. The city has several beautiful churches, both Catholic and Protestant and especially the Cathedral of St. Mauritius and St. Katharina are worth a visit. The two towers of the cathedral rise high above the city and can be seen from several kilometres away.

One of the more curious tourist destinations in Magdeburg is certainly the "Wasserstrassenkreuz Magdeburg", which is a crossing point of rivers connecting the Elbe, the Mittellandkanal and the Elbe-Havel canal. Here the ships sail on two levels, which is very exciting to observe and is itself a magnificent architectural masterpiece. The water bridge can also be crossed on foot, so give it a try!

Magdeburg is also more than just churches and beautiful buildings. Take a walk into the city centre and start with a lovely stroll along the "Breter Weg" or "Ernst-Reuter-Allee", which is the traditional shopping area of the city, packed with exciting speciality shops and restaurants and small bistros. Experience the vibrant life of the city from one of the many outdoor cafés and enjoy the German hospitality of this traditional city.
