Nyborg

Nyborg is a market town on East Funen with about 17,000 inhabitants. The town is located on the Storebælt and is connected to Zealand via the Storebælt Bridge. Nyborg is especially known for Nyborg Castle, which is the oldest royal castle in Scandinavia. The town is also home to Denmark's oldest open-air theatre, Nyborg Voldspil.
Nyborg Castle was built around 1170, and was originally used as a royal castle. In 1913, the castle was abandoned by the guarding military force and then the National Museum was responsible for its renovation and maintenance. Today, Nyborg Castle functions as a cultural history museum where various historical objects are exhibited. The castle also hosts the annual Danehof medieval market and the Nyborg Battle Days festival. Here, various reenactment groups participate, fighting and performing jousting as in the Danehof era.
Nyborg Voldspil is Denmark's oldest open-air theatre and started back in 1939. Since then the performances have been moved away from the castle and further up the ramparts, hence the name Nyborg Voldspil. Every year since the beginning, only interrupted during the occupation, a musical or operetta has been performed on stage in the beautiful surroundings. There is an annual participation of about 300 volunteers both on stage and behind the stage. Performances in recent years include Grease, Atlantis and The Sound of Music.
In and around Nyborg there are fantastic opportunities to get into nature. The area offers many good cycling routes, both the national cycling route No. 8 and No. 6 go through Nyborg, but there are also a number of local cycling routes of varying lengths. From the saddle you can see many manor houses and castles and along the cycle routes you will also find local breweries and interesting farm shops with local food.

There are many beaches offering something different, such as a bathing facility with good changing facilities, an enclosed shallow water area for children, a special bridge for launching kayaks and along the entire coast you will find bathing bridges and toilet facilities.
