Faaborg

destination

If you want to go on a driving holiday to experience Denmark (with little houses in red and yellow colours and winding cobbled roads that all led to ice-cream kiosks and blue waves) well, then you should go to Faaborg.

Faaborg is a summer village right on the South Funen archipelago just 40 kilometres from Odense.

The town is easy to get to by car, and the road itself is a lovely experience through the South Funen countryside.

When you arrive, the first thing you'll notice is the sunshine, not from the sky, but from the many smiles you'll meet as you walk down the cobbled streets.

The second thing you'll notice is a scent of roses, violets, and sunflowers from the many plants and flowers that grow up along the houses. It's a scent worthy of a botanical garden.

The third thing you will discover is a feeling of having entered a historic medieval town.

As you walk along the cosy little streets with their many old houses leaning gently against the road, it's not hard to imagine what it was like in 1229, when the castle was still there and soldiers with swords and armour roamed the town.

While enjoying an ice cream in the square or shopping in the wide range of specialty shops, your gaze will sometimes seek out the large yellow bell tower that dominates the city, just as people's eyes have done since the 1400s when the tower was built.

If you want to know more about this historic city, you can come during the period 25 June to 26 August, when the city watchmen go about their business every evening at 9pm while they tell stories.

If June and August do not fit in the calendar, there is no alarm. You can book an hour-long weight tour for the whole family for around DKK 1175

After you have seen the historical Faaborg, your feet will automatically lead you to the harbour. Here you will be greeted by the fresh salty sea scent and a fantastic view.

As you stand looking at the many beautiful yachts moored, you'll notice the sound of laughing children mingling with the cries of seagulls.

If you follow the sound, you will come to Faaborg's harbour bath, where two large bathing bridges are set up just 100 metres from Faaborg centre.

The bathing bridges have jumping possibilities for children and children's minds. If you have younger children, there are also bathing facilities in a safe environment for them. The site is also equipped with outdoor showers, toilets and even a sauna.

Once you've been all around the beautiful town, you can rent a bike and study the beautiful South Funen countryside at your own pace.

Here you can take a trip to Horne Round Church and Mausoleum. From the church there is a great view that should be enjoyed hand in hand with someone you love. If you're interested in film, you'll probably recognise the church from the film Adam's Apples, in which it played a major role. That they chose this particular church for the film is no surprise, as it has a beautiful and dramatic appearance both inside and out. It is certainly worth a bike ride. And yes, you can take the car too.
