Frøbjerg Bavnehøj

Visit the protected nature area Frøbjerg Bavnehøj, which has the highest point on Funen at 131 metres. From here you get a magnificent view. In the area you will also find that there are many different trails to walk and if you follow the longest trail, you will pass several memorials of national historic importance - including, not least, a beautiful memorial grove for the victims of the occupation, established in 1954.

Danmarks Fugle Zoo

Experience true Funen farmhouse idyll in Denmark's Bird Zoo in Tommerup. The 5-hectare area contains as many as 800 different birds from all four corners of the world. H.C. Andersen House

If you're on holiday in Denmark and passing through Funen, then you should stop by H.C. The stunning gardens are laid out in true Japanese tradition, with as many as 6 different styles spread across the area. The Japanese Gardens also has a cosy café, which offers sushi and Japanese-inspired meatballs, among other things.

The South Funen Archipelago

The South Funen Archipelago is the shallow waters south of Funen, home to more than 55 islands, islets and islets. A fine ferry system enables transport between the inhabited islands, where some of the islanders live mainly from farming, some fishing or commuting to jobs on the "mainland".

A good way to experience the South Funen archipelago is by hiking along the Øhavsstien, which at 220 km is one of Denmark's longest hiking routes. The Øhavsstien is a marked trail system from Faldsled in the west to Langeland in the east and Ærø in the south.

The Christmas market in Odense is a true time travel back to H.C. Andersen's time, and is located in the charming old town close to H.C. Andersen's House. There's a special feeling in the air as Christmas approaches in Odense. Rosengårdcentret is decked out in its finest Christmas finery, both inside and out, and the city's cosy pedestrian street is decked out with glittering hearts and decorations that form a ceiling of light over Vestergade and Kongensgade.

Christmas in Odense kicks off when the big Christmas tree on Flakhaven is lit, usually with lots of expectant spectators of all ages. And from here it's not long until the city's big Christmas market gets underway. In 2018, it had the largest Christmas tree in Denmark.

The charming H.C. Andersen Christmas Market is open the first two weekends in December, transforming the beautiful old town of H.C. Andersens Hus into a huge Christmas market as it looked in the early 1800s. The theme has been running since 2013, when it was decided to "have Christmas as in the Old Days at H.C. Andersen's time". Everything is of course built around H.C. Andersen's famous fairy tale characters. Every year, more than 50,000 children and adults visit the cosy Christmas market, which almost feels like a journey back in time to Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen's childhood. The market has around 65 stalls where you will find everything your heart desires from Christmas items, gift ideas, crafts, clothing, toys and much more. Enjoy a nice cup of mulled wine to warm your hands and eat a few of the fluffy Funen apple slices. In addition to the many cosy stalls, there is also plenty of entertainment, such as horse-drawn carriages, historic merry-go-rounds, livery men, jesters and Christmas choirs, all of which help to add to the historical feel and atmosphere.

Just a few kilometres west of Odense, you will find the beautiful nature area around Langesø Estate, where a very charming Christmas market is held every year. Many Funen residents have a tradition of visiting the Langesø market every year with the whole family, either to find just the right Christmas tree, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere with a cup of hot mulled wine and a good portion of apple slices in a cosy setting.
