Treviso
Treviso is an extremely beautiful and charming medium-sized town in the situated Veneto region. Nevertheless, it remains a bit of a hidden gem, often overshadowed by the region's more popular spots like Venice itself and Lido di Jesolo. Thus, the city is perfect if you think you need to get away from these tourist-filled behemoths for a more authentic experience. In fact, Treviso has everything you could wish for in an Italian sightseeing city, with its medieval walls, beautiful canals, narrow cobbled streets and beautiful old churches.
Venice
A good 15,000 houses, palaces and churches spread over 117 islands criss-crossed by 177 canals and linked by 354 bridges. The indescribable wealth of the past has left its indelible mark on Venice's culture, art and architecture, which are absolutely world-class. Fall in love in St Mark's Square, explore the canals according to your temperament, whether in gondolas or by vaporetto, and discover the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge.
The incredible fish and vegetable market "Campo della Pescaria" in Venice is for the inveterate gastronomes.
The architecture of the Doge's Palace leaves no one untouched, and a visit to the impressive St Mark's Basilica with its thousands of square metres of gold mosaics is a must for anyone visiting Venice - and yes, the list of sights is as endlessly beautiful as the city itself.
Basilica di San Marco
St Mark's Basilica in Venice is considered a masterpiece of architecture. A lavish cathedral, shaped like a Greek cross, with five bell-shaped domes. It is recommended to book a ticket or a guided tour in advance to avoid queues. Inside the cathedral, the walls, vaults and domes are decorated with beautiful mosaics telling the stories of Jesus' life. Also see the golden altarpiece, the treasury and the gilded bronze horses in the gallery on the first floor. The 99-metre bell tower at the top of the cathedral offers a splendid view of the San Marco district and Venice.
Dogepaladset
The Doge's Palace in St Mark's Square is one of Venice's most important sights. The White House pales in comparison to the opulent palace from which the Doge ruled for more than 1000 years. Walk up the Giants' Staircase and see the colossal statues of Mars and Neptune. Inside, you'll also find the Senate Chamber, where laws were passed, and the Hall of the Council of Timans, where the judiciary ensured state security. The Doge's Palace contains large paintings depicting Venice as the victorious and just state.
Rialto Market
The Italian markets are a chapter in themselves, offering an abundance of fresh produce in season. Venice is no exception, with the Rialto Market (Mercado di Realto) particularly recommended. Locals shop every day at the market, where you can wander among colourful fruit, vegetables and freshly caught fish. Around the market there are also many restaurants where you can have lunch, for example. The Rialto Bridge, with its shopping opportunities, is also close by.
Rialto Bridge
The Rialto Bridge is one of Venice's many beautiful sights and has a long history. The bridge was built as one of the first bridges from which Italians could cross the Grand Canal dry. Originally built in 1181, it has since been rebuilt several times. Today the stone bridge houses small shops across the bridge where Venetian carnival masks, brocade fabrics and souvenirs can be bought. Don't miss the beautiful views from the bridge over the Grand Canal either. To avoid the crowds, it's best to visit the bridge early in the morning or late at night.
