Lucca
Take a driving holiday in Europe and head to Tuscany in Italy. Find a cheap weekend break for the whole family or plan a longer summer or winter break in Italy. Find a cheap road trip with Risskov BIlferie and explore a little north of Pizza. Lucca is the perfect size for a one-day getaway. The city is surrounded by a huge 16th century city wall, designed to protect the rich Lucchese from neighbouring towns. Today, the wall is a public park with small green oases all around, from which you can enjoy a fine view down on the city. It is recommended to rent a bike and ride around the wall. Explore the cosy little streets and discover many fine restaurants if you venture deep into the alleys. The cityscape is generally characterised by tall towers, which were built by the city's influential families - the taller a tower, the richer a family. The city has a wealth of museums, including a Puccini museum, as the composer was born in the city. Find a cheap holiday in the south at Risskov and get away on a family holiday filled with beautiful scenery and plenty of experiences.
Pisa
A visit to Campo Miracoli is one of the great experiences in Pisa. It is almost a miracle to see the beautiful buildings: the cathedral, the baptistery, the cemetery building and then the bell tower "the Leaning Tower of Pisa" standing side by side. Of course, the great experience is the "Leaning Tower" where, after a long and costly renovation, you can once again climb the 294 steps to the top at 55 metres, from where you have a wonderful view of the area.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
Discover the distinctive and world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Built in 1173, the tower briefly stood straight up. However, it wasn't long before, as a result of slightly too soft soil and inadequate foundations, it began to lean. At its highest point, the tower reaches about 56 metres. The tower has an inclination of 3.97° and in the 1990s was the subject of threats by the Italian mafia to blow it up.
Fortezza Vecchia
One of Livorno's great landmarks is the beautiful fortress that dominates the town's harbour. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the fortress started life as a tower, but over the years more has been built around it. The aim, of course, has been to protect the important hub that Livorno was and to some extent still is today. Today, the characteristic square tower stands, considerably lower than then, though still visible above the fortress walls. Immediately next to the fortress stands a round tower, Mastio di Matilde, built somewhat later than the original tower.
Livorno
Go on a car holiday in Europe and find a cheap summer holiday south with cheap hotels at Risskov. Italy is a sought-after destination for self-drive tourists and there are many places to choose from. Find a range of cheap hotels with Risskov and set off on an adventure trip in Tuscany. The beautiful Tuscan port and canal town of Livorno is located on the west coast of northern Italy, just 20 miles from the arguably more famous Italian city of Pisa. The most important port city in Tuscany and one of the largest in the country, there is plenty of beautiful architecture, interesting history and cultural features to discover - not to mention direct boat and ferry links to some of the nearby islands. The charming old canal structure is a bit like that found in Venice, and although Livorno is a somewhat larger city to walk around, it's still very attractive and definitely worth a visit. Find child-friendly hotels in the Tuscany area at Risskov and discover Livorno at your own pace on your family holiday south.
Riserva Statale Calafuria
You'll find this beautiful protected nature area in the south-west of the Livorno mountains. The reserve covers 115 hectares on the west coast of northern Italy, offering both rugged, untamed cliffs on the coast and vast hilly woodlands further inland. Obviously, an ideal area for hiking. The park's highest point is Montaccio, which reaches almost 250 metres above sea level.
Montecatini Terme
The centuries-old spa town of Montecatini Terme is located in the Valdinievole Valley. The small town is the largest spa town in Tuscany. It was founded in the 8th century and has a very turbulent history. Montecatini Terme was ruled by the principalities of Lucca, Florence and Sienna and was influenced by Lorraine in the 18th century. This lovely town is pleasant to explore on foot.
The healing springs of Montecatini have a beneficial effect both internally and externally. The nine spas of Montecatini are visited by about two million tourists every year.
Terme Tettuccio
Montecatini Terme is famous for its spas, of which it has 9.
Perhaps the most impressive of the 9 spas is Terme Tettuccio.
Terme Tettuccio was restored in 1925-1928, and today looks stunning with its columns, fountains and exotic plants. The spa itself focuses on treatment through the ingestion of the curative waters, which are said to help with; constipation, liver problems, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney problems, stomach and intestinal problems.
Manarola
Manarola is the second smallest of the five villages that make up the famous Cinque Terre National Park area in Liguria. It is also one of the oldest towns in the area and is beautifully situated at more than 70 metres above sea level. However, the altitude varies a lot as you walk around the town, with streets winding and twisting between buildings.
Manarola has a very special atmosphere and is characterised by picturesque and extremely colourful houses and charming narrow streets. The town square is home to several cosy shops and restaurants, and if you like seafood, there are many good and varied options.
There are several things to see such as the beautiful San Lorenzo church located in the highest part of the city. The bell tower used to be a lookout to spot pirates. There are also several good viewpoints in the town, which are closer to the water, and just outside the town to the south you will find a natural area ideal for walking.
