Vaxholm

Visit Vaxholm, the capital of the archipelago. Just an hour's boat ride from Stockholm, Vaxholm is a cosy little archipelago town full of cafés, restaurants, shops and beaches, not to mention beautiful scenery! Here you can rent a bike and explore the countryside from the saddle of a bicycle. The town's sights include many historic buildings, including Bogesund Castle and Vaxholm Fortress, and you can also experience a Viking walk and learn how people lived here 1000 years ago. There's also an art gallery, guided tours, kayaking and more.

Wira Bruk

You can also visit Wira Bruk, which is a gunsmith's workshop and was the country's first swordsmith. Back in the day, the blacksmith's workshop had the exclusive right to manufacture swords for the Swedish Royal Family. Today it is a vibrant and beautiful industrial environment.

Stockholm

If you fancy a trip to the theatre, try the Royal Dramatic Theatre at Nybroplan or visit some of the smaller theatres on Söder. The Opera at Gustav Adolfs Torv is also worth a visit, not only for its performances but also for its beautiful architecture. The Globe regularly hosts major sporting events, concerts and shows.

If shopping is your thing, the area around Hötorget and Stureplan offers plenty of options, as does Götgatan on Söder. Don't miss a visit to the NK department store on Hamngatan.

From Stureplan you can walk down Birger Jarlsgatan, where you'll find Orrefors, Kosta Boda glass design and exclusive fashion boutiques. At the bottom of the street you'll find the beautiful national stage, Dramaten. Nybrokajen is just ahead, and here you will find all the ferries that can take you out into the archipelago.

If you want a bit more greenery, a walk by Kungliga Djurgården is recommended, or perhaps a stroll along Norr Mälarstrand. Långholmen is also a lovely oasis in the middle of the city. In summer, there are several places to swim in the city, both at Långholmen, Södermalm and Kungsholmen.

The Vasa Museum (near Skansen) is a great experience. Here you can learn about the people and the time around 1628, when the warship sank. Near the Vasa Museum is Junibacken, the Astrid Lindgren Museum in Stockholm - and it's not just for children.

Located on a small island in the city, Gamla Stan is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Nordic countries, with a lively environment, cosy restaurants and cafés, and exciting rummage shops with old weapons and orders - and with the castle on top.

Stockholm's old town

The Old Town, which until 1980 was called "The City between the Bridges", is Stockholm's historic centre and is located on Stadsholmen. For many hundreds of years, the Old Town was Stockholm, and its many narrow streets and alleyways are well preserved. The narrowest alley is Mårten Trotzig's Alley, which is only 90 cm wide at its narrowest point. You can enjoy a snack or a bite to eat at some of the cosy cafés and restaurants in the district. Stockholm's Royal Palace, the King's official residence, is also located in the Old Town.

Christmas market in Stockholm is a must when Christmas is approaching. The narrow cobbled streets of Stockholm's Gamla Stan provide the perfect setting for the city's adventurous Christmas markets, which complete the experience with fragrant Christmas specialities and unique Christmas gift ideas. In November and December, Sweden's capital is the setting for a truly fantastic Christmas atmosphere.

With church bells ringing from above, Stockholm welcomes Christmas spirit in a class of its own. Everywhere in the city, streets and shops are decorated with lots of lights and Christmas decorations. The smell of roasting almonds and chestnuts mingles with mulled wine and gingerbread to bring out the Christmas spirit in children and adults alike. In the market stalls, traders welcome you with homemade traditional Christmas decorations, handmade toys and lots of local produce.

The most traditional of the Christmas markets can be found at Skansen, Stockholm's famous open-air museum. Here you can, among other things, cast candles, bake old-fashioned bread and watch craftsmen make their products while you watch.

The city's oldest square, Stortorget in Gamla Stan, is home to the city's most beautifully decorated Christmas market. The traditional Christmas market has a history that goes back over 100 years and helps to create a historic atmosphere throughout the square. This is only further enhanced by the surrounding medieval buildings and cobbled streets. The atmosphere is completed by the traditional red Christmas stalls.

For those where the Christmas markets are not enough, Stockholm offers a number of shops where it is possible to do a lot of shopping. Stockholm is therefore a great opportunity to find a Christmas gift, which is often available cheaper than in Denmark.

After a long and pleasant day in Stockholm's shopping streets, it is possible to visit one of the city's many cafés and restaurants.

Gröna Lund

Gröna Lund is an amusement park in Djurgården, where you can easily spend a whole day with the whole family. The park offers lots of fun activities and rides for all ages.

Siggesta Gård

Take the whole family on a trip to Siggesta Farm. Here you can meet farm animals, play role-playing games or football golf and climb the obstacle course in the forest. The farm's bakery offers good food, a coffee break or a glass of wine. Perfect for a day in the countryside.

Lillsved Outdoor

Find a cheap summer holiday to Lillsved in Sweden at Risskov and enjoy an active holiday with the family. Lillsved is located in the northern part of Värmdö and is considered to be the natural starting point for outdoor activities. Activities are available all year round.

In spring there are botanical excursions to look for bats or birds.

In summer there are plenty of opportunities for swimming. Take a boat out to sea on a hot summer day, you can go with Strömmakanalbolaget or Waxholmsbolaget. It's also popular to rent a kayak and paddle out between the archipelago's islands.

In autumn, the forests offer good opportunities for picking berries or mushrooms. For those who want a more active alternative, there are opportunities for horse riding, hiking or cycling.

In winter there is both skating and skiing in the area. And of course there will be both food and hot drinks at the cosy cafés. Go on an active holiday with Risskov and find cheap and child-friendly hotels for your family drive holiday in Lillsved.

Stockholm archipelago

The archipelago boats take you out into the magnificent archipelago, which is beautiful in all seasons. Many of the boats serve lunch and/or dinner on board. How about steak, a shrimp boat or herring? The boats sail out to many of the pearls of the archipelago - Sandhamn, Grinda, Utö or Vaxholm to name a few.

Djurgården

Djurgården in Stockholm offers several great experiences for the whole family. For example, visit Skansen, an open-air museum and animal park. Or go to Gröna Lund amusement park where you can easily spend a whole day! The ABBA Museum and the Vasa Museum are also worth a visit.

There is also an Astrid Lindgren museum in Stockholm, which is a very popular attraction for both children and adults. Further out on Djurgården is Waldemarsudde, where you'll find a museum of Prince Eugene's paintings and a fantastic garden, as well as the Thiel Gallery, which houses exciting exhibitions by world-famous artists.

Arlandastad Golf Club

If you like to play golf, book a hotel at Risskov and take a cheap golf holiday north of Stockholm, where you'll find Arlandastad Golf Club. Here you can spend the day outdoors with the clubs for company. The place has a nice restaurant when it's time for refreshments and with a mini break or a weekend stay from Risskov, it doesn't have to cost a lot to go on a golf holiday outside the country's borders.

Rosersberg Castle

Listen to the wings of history at Rosersberg Castle. Here you can enjoy a magnificent experience in rural surroundings, with vast green spaces and the glistening waters of Lake Malaren as a backdrop. Take a guided tour and learn more about Charles XIV Johan and his wife Desideria's former pleasure palace and summer residence.

Drottningholm

A day trip to Drottningholm (Queen's Island) is recommended. Drottningholm Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - because of the two special buildings, the Chinese Castle (Kina slott) and the Drottningholm Theatre (Drottningholms slottsteater). The palace is the best preserved royal palace in Sweden. Drottningholm Palace is also known as the "Swedish Versailles". The castle represents European royal architecture from the 17th century. century. Besides the exotic Chinese pavilion, the palace theatre and the magnificent palace park, there is much to see and do. With its outdoor facilities, it is also ideal for a family day out.

Steninge Slot

In Steninge, outside Märsta, you will find Steninge Castle. The building dates back to 18th century and the castle park is open to the public. You can also visit Steningeladen nearby and look at local handicrafts or you can grab a bite to eat and a cup of coffee.

The Cable Park

If you're bold and adventurous, visit The Cable Park at Halmsjön near Arlanda Airport. Here you can water-ski, but instead of being pulled by a boat, you'll be pulled by an electric-powered track. Not only is it great fun, it's also very climate-friendly.
