During the Thirty Years War, the city was almost completely destroyed. It was a religious war that played out between Catholics and Protestants in the Holy Roman Empire. The war started with the Bohemian uprising in 1618 and ended in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia. A little under three hundred years later, it was all over again and once again Magdeburg was reduced to a smoking heap of ashes during the Allied bombing campaigns towards the end of the Second World War. But the city managed to recover and even survived the GDR era.
