Checkpoint Charlie

When Berlin was divided into East and West from 1945 to 1989, Checkpoint Charlie was one of the most famous border crossings. The sense of the Cold War is evident at Checkpoint Charlie. Although the name sounds nice and glamorous, Checkpoint Charlie actually just means Checkpoint "C". It tells the story of a series of spectacular escape attempts from the east to the west, which sadly cost several lives. Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled on 22 June 1990 on the occasion of German reunification.

At the border crossing is a fascinating museum with an extensive collection of pictures, photos, newspaper clippings, films and other items documenting and telling the story of the Berlin Wall and the many attempts to escape over the Wall. It is both exciting and frightening.

German Museum of Technology Berlin

The Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin, or Technical Museum, is probably best suited for older children and adults. Television Tower

Visit Berlin's architectural landmark, the Television Tower, which is 368 metres high and can be seen from all over the city. The TV tower was built in the 1950s on the city's most famous square, Alexanderplatz. The enthusiasm of the time for space travel and rockets is evident in the architecture and some of the inspiration for the tower came from the Soviet Sputnik satellite. To this day, the TV Tower is still used as a TV tower and around 60 TV and radio channels are broadcast from the tower.

Parliaments

The Reichstag is Germany's parliament building, located in the centre of Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate. During the Cold War, the building was located in West Berlin and the Berlin Wall ran directly behind the Reichstag, which at the time stood deserted and abandoned. Bombings during World War II left the building in ruins, but in 1990 it was completely rebuilt with a magnificent glass dome on the roof. Museum of Natural History

If you've got the kids along for the ride, a visit to Berlin's Natural History Museum is certainly not a bad choice, entertainment-wise either. It is probably one of the most important museums of its kind in the world, with over 30 million zoological, palaeontological and mineralogical specimens, and is famous for its spectacular exhibits, including the earliest specimen of the bird 'Archaeopteryx'.

Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was about 43 km long and 3.6 metres high and divided West and East Germany from 1961 until 1989, when Berlin was reunited. Victory Column
