Sandnes

In the centre of Sandnes is the aptly named 'Langgata' pedestrian street, which is also a natural focal point of the town. It is also home to a number of restaurants and small shops with everything needed to meet the needs of the approximately 75,000 inhabitants.

Bikes can be borrowed at the tourist office, and yes, it's completely free, and then you can cycle around the nicely level terrain and the very bike-friendly town.

Sandnes is known for its pottery industry, and there is a simple explanation for this. As Sandnes lies in the middle of the Gandsfjorden, there are deposits with a good clay layer, which is used to produce clay pots. You can also visit the potter Simonsen in Langgata and take home a 'Sandnesgauk'. The Sandnesgauk functions as an ocarina, an old wind instrument that could resemble an egg, and which is only made in Sandnes.

Dalsnuten

Dalsnuten is a popular excursion destination and suitable for both the youngest and oldest members of the family.

The Dalsuten is 323 metres above sea level, so it's certainly a manageable climb to the top, and the trip itself takes just over 2 hours. The car can be parked in Gramstad, and then it's just a matter of following the marked route up to the incredible views there from the top of the mountain.

Sola beach

Sola beach is a shallow beach with plenty of sun during the summer. It is nature's very own water park and is great for children. All year round, visitors can wade into the water and take a romantic stroll along the silky beach. As soon as the wind starts, the surfers come pouring in, and with good reason, the area is great all year round.

Gamlebyen i Stavanger

Experience the historic area of Stavanger, also known as the 'Old Town', which definitely is worth a visit. Experience Europe's best-preserved wooden house constructions spread over approx. 170 white wooden buildings. Take the tour around the Old Town on a Sunday morning, as it is the best time to enjoy the beautiful houses while the area is not too busy.

Stavanger

Stavanger is one of Norway's most populous municipalities with over 100,000 inhabitants. Stavanger's city centre doesn't seem very big, but the advantages are that it's easy to get around on foot and therefore an excellent opportunity to enjoy the city's sights from street level. The central shopping street is set in an area surrounded by older wooden buildings with narrow and charming alleyways, take a trip past Kirkegata and see if you can squeeze some shopping into an otherwise tight schedule.

Since the North Sea's first oil field was discovered in 1969, Stavanger has been a cultural capital, it also became a university town and has also attracted a lot of international workers. In other words, Stavanger has transformed itself into an exciting city with a wealth of cultural experiences and a vibrant nightlife.

Skagenkaien in Stavanger

´Lysløypa´ in Stavanger may not be as well known as ´Bryggen´ in Bergen, but the beautiful houses along the illuminated Skagenkaj in Stavanger are a sight to behold at dusk and there's guaranteed to be a drink too.

Many of the buildings used to be stalls, but now house restaurants and nightclubs. This is where revellers gather in the evenings, especially when the weather gods are kind, but as we all know, the weather rarely stops a good party, although it can get pretty cold in winter, but then you'll need to wear some suitably warm clothes.

Gladmatfestivalen

It almost goes without saying; the Gladmad Festival takes place at the end of July and is visited by around 250,000 happy festival-goers every year. Every corner of Stavanger is used and many events take place during the festival.

Previously, there have been events where visitors could, among other things, learn to smoke sardines at Hermetikkmuseet and chili-eating competition in Upper Holmegate. There are always many stalls and then restaurants in town run special offers.

On the Main Stage there is entertainment and music and at a previous festival the highlight was artist Pia Myrvold's large edible artwork, which she created on the Main Stage.

Stavanger Cathedral

Stavanger's distinguished cathedral is one of the best preserved buildings from the Middle Ages. Located in a northern part of the idyllic Breiavatnet in Stavanger, the church certainly deserves a visit.

The cathedral hosts a number of concerts and exciting events, so be sure to check the church's calendar of activities to see if there's anything exciting going on right now.

Fjord cruise on Lysefjorden - Stavanger city centre

No matter what time of year you choose to visit Stavanger, there will always be the opportunity to enjoy a fjord cruise on the Lysefjorden and experience the waterfall, the many idyllic islands and the abundant and rugged scenery that Norway has to offer, and of course the Pulpit.

Departure is from Skagenkaien in Stavanger and the trip takes about 3 hours.

Christmas market in Stavanger

Head to Stavanger for the Christmas holidays and visit the city's many cosy Christmas markets, all of which are sure to get any visitor in the Christmas spirit, whatever their age. Some markets last a few days, while others run from the end of November right through to Christmas. One of the cosiest markets is located in Stavanger's Old Town and usually takes place on the first Sunday in December. Here, the historic backdrop and the many cosy art shops, workshops, cafés and museums are accompanied by a wonderful Christmas atmosphere, and you're sure to find inspiration for your Christmas gifts.

Just outside Stavanger you'll find Kongeparken, the largest amusement park in south-east Norway, and here too there will be a Christmas market - one the kids will love if you're bringing the family on holiday. The whole of Kongeparken is transformed into a fairytale kingdom of Christmas elves, twinkling lights, Christmas workshops, mulled wine, music, a chocolate factory, Christmas shows and lots of exciting activities.

Upper Holmegate (Fargegata)

Don't be surprised if the snow falls and the white landscape piles up and the white wooden houses dazzle the eyes in the winter sun! Take a trip to Upper Holmegate in the centre of Stavanger and experience something as unoriginal as a colourful street! In Upper Holmegate, the wooden houses are coloured in turquoise, pink and several green and orange varieties. It's also filled with small specialty shops and cafes. Norwegian Oil Museum

Most people are probably aware that in recent Norwegian history, welfare and oil go hand in hand, and in Stavanger you already have your feet planted on Norwegian oil. In 1969, the North Sea's first oil field was discovered, and the Slik field that followed helped make the Stavanger region a key player in the overall Norwegian economy.

A visit to the Norwegian Oil Museum will provide insight into how it all started, the exhibitions tell the strange story of how the oil and gas is made and then refined and what these vital resources are used for. The museum also gives visitors an insight into technological advances as well as how oil resources affect Norwegian society.

The museum presents original objects, models, films and interactive exhibitions that convey everything about everyday life that can be turned into drama!

Norwegian Canning Museum

The Norwegian Canning Museum is located in a former canning factory in Øvre Strandgate in Old Stavanger. Opened in 1982, the museum tells the story of the canning industry, which was the city's main source of income between 1880 and 1960.

Preikestolen

Preikestolen is the most visited attraction in  Rogaland and the mountain plateau has been named the world's most beautiful viewpoints by Lonely Planet. It towers a full 604 meters above the Lysefjorden and people from all over the world enjoy the nature experiences, selfies and varying footwear.

Tourist road Jæren

The Jæren Tourist Road is a National Tourist Route that winds its way through a beautiful coastal landscape between Ogna and Bore. The route is 41 km long and runs past miles of beaches and sand dunes with the Jærfyrene Sea on one side and a flat and expansive landscape on the other. There are also plenty of local restaurants along the way.
