Paderborn
Paderborn is located in North Rhine-Westphalia and is also the capital of the Paderborn district. The city's name derives from the River Pader, which also runs through the city, and at 4 km in length it is the shortest river in Germany. The beautiful town hall, which adorns the town square, was built in 1616 and the Jesuit church, which consists of several styles with Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque elements, is certainly worth a visit. The largest computer museum in the world, the Heinz Nixdorf Museums Forum, is also located in Paderborn. The museum takes its visitors on an informative and very interesting journey into the history of communication, from the very beginnings of civilisation right up to the present day. Of course, there is a special focus on the development of computers, which is not surprising since the museum was established by Nixdorf Computers, which incidentally is also based in Paderborn.
Wewelsburg
About 80 km northwest of Kassel lies Wevelsburg, which certainly deserves a detour if the history behind Nazism is of particular interest. Wevelsburg was the place where Heinrich Himmler's famous SS corps was ideologically indoctrinated, trained and initiated into the many secret SS rituals. It was also here that the 'Totenkopf rings' of already dead SS men were to be gathered in the cellar, symbolising their eternal presence as a permanent part of SS culture and Nazi Germany for all eternity. The castle runs a permanent exhibition called "Ideologie und terror der SS", a unique exhibition that deals with the visions of the SS Corps ideology while giving visitors a unique insight into the culture behind Nazism and the megalomania that eventually brought the Third Reich to its knees.
Externsteine
Take a cheap car holiday in Germany and discover the Externsteine, a distinctive sandstone formation located in the Teutoburger Wald. The curious formation consists of several high sandstone cliffs standing, almost as if carved out, as narrow columns of stone and rising strikingly out of the surrounding forest landscape. Archaeological investigations show that parts of the monument date back as far as 10,700 BC. Over the centuries the site has been used both as a hermitage and a Christian chapel, and around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries both nationalist scholars and members of the Völkisch movement took an interest in the monument. This interest reached its peak during the Nazi regime, when the Externsteine began to be used in various propaganda campaigns. Today, the site is one of the area's most popular tourist attractions and an ideal place to visit on a self-drive holiday or mini-vacation in Germany.
Holsterturm
If you are interested in history, a cheap summer holiday in the middle of Germany with a visit to the Holsterturm is highly recommended. One of Nieheim's landmarks, the Holsterturm is a lookout tower that looks back on more than 700 years of history on the heights of the Holsterberg, south of Nieheim's city centre. Located in the Eggegebirge Nature Park, several of the area's hiking trails will take you past the tower. From the tower you can enjoy a lovely view of the scenic surroundings.
Berlebeck Eagle Sanctuary
Find a cheap holiday at Risskov and take the whole family to the famous bird park Adlerwarte Berlebeck, located in the Detmolder district of Berlebeck. It was founded in 1939 and today houses 46 species of birds of prey with more than 200 specimens. During the season there are several daily bird shows, where you can get a very special experience, from one of the 160 spectator seats. Also find child-friendly hotels for the trip and go on holiday at your own pace.
Falkenburg ruins
The Falkenburg ruins are located in the south-eastern part of the Teutoburger Wald and are a relic of a former stronghold built around 1100. The Falkenburg, now registered as a protected monument, has been under investigation by an archaeological excavation team since April 2005. Already during the first 6 months, there were great successes and large parts of the hidden castle have since been excavated. As the excavated masonry is unstable after being buried for centuries, visits to the ruins are only allowed during guided tours.
Telegraph station No 32
A relic of a forgotten communications technology, the 32nd Prussian optical telegraph station stands tall on the Oeynhausen peninsula just outside Nieheim. The station was active between 1833 and 1849 and was the 32nd of its kind on the Berlin-Koblenz telegraph line. After just 15 years it was taken out of service when the new and better electromagnetic telegraph was invented. On request, it is possible to have a guided tour with an expert, around the station.
Westphalia Culinarium
The Westfalen Culinarium, which opened in April 2006, consists of four museums with Westphalian specialities. Spread over an area of 3000 m², you can discover the Cheese Museum, the Westphalian Ham Museum, the Bread Museum and the Beer and Spirits Museum. The museum covers German, European and global "basic foods" and there is also a tasting room where you can sample the region's many exciting specialities.
Teutoburg Forest/Eggegebirge Nature Park
The Eggegebirge Nature Park is a recreational area of more than 2700 km², located in north-eastern North Rhine-Westphalia. The park, which consists of about 60% forest, was founded in 1965 and expanded to its current size in 2008, and is today the area's largest and Germany's sixth-largest nature park. The area is ideal for hikers and nature lovers, with beautiful varied landscapes and numerous sites and monuments to discover. It is recommended to stop by Nieheim Tourismus- und Kulturamt, the town centre, where you will find information and maps about the area's many hiking trails and opportunities.
Nieheim Art Trail
If you want a hike with a difference, the Nieheimer Kunstpfad is definitely for you. Through the interplay of nature, art, culture and landscape, the art trail will awaken your curiosity for this potential new trend. The various objects and works of art you will pass on your way have been developed by international artists and carefully placed to blend in with the natural surroundings. The route, which starts in the centre of Nieheim, is not a conventional path - on the contrary, you will leave the normal forest path several times along the way to explore the artefacts.
