Uelzen

Visit the charming town of Uelzen, best known for its "Hundertwasser-Bahnhof". The fascinating and colourful railway station is one of the most beautiful in the world and it is possible to have an exciting guided tour for a small fee.

See also the city's Gothic church of St. Mary, which boasts a steeple as tall as 86 metres and an apostle's chapel dating back to 1350. Also visit the beautiful Schloss Holdenstedt, set in lovely green surroundings. The castle is home to the town's regional museum and you can learn all about the town's and the area's long history, while there are also fine art exhibitions worth checking out.

Bleckede

Bleckede, just southeast of Hamburg, is also a great place for a self-drive holiday. Take a cheap mini break to Bleckede and see and experience the town's Elbschloss. The current castle sits on the remains of a former castle dating back to 1270, of which the tall tower still stands. There is a viewing platform at the top of the tower from which you can enjoy a lovely view. In the castle itself you will find a fine exhibition telling about the exciting river landscape of the Elbe. In Bleckede it is also worth taking a closer look at the old baroque church of St. Jacobi and the green areas, where you can find interesting stone formations in the Findlingsgarten Breetze. Lüneburg

Go on a car holiday in Germany and explore Northern Germany on your own. A pleasant getaway would definitely be a visit to Lüneburg which is located on the Ilmenau River, not far from Hamburg. It is an old medieval town that became rich from the trade in salt, or white gold as it was called then. You might want to start at Am Sande, at Skt. Or take a ride on the horse-drawn carriage that takes the curious around the city's most beautiful neighbourhoods. Find an active holiday to Lüneburg with the whole family and drive south to Hamburg with Risskov.

BadeLand Wolfsburg

BadeLand Wolfsburg is the largest water park in northern Germany and offers a host of fun activities. Wave pool, slides, sauna, whirlpool and relaxation area are just some of them. There are child-friendly hotels nearby, so why not take the whole family on holiday and surprise the kids with a car holiday and a trip to BadeLand Wolfsburg.

Celle

The charming half-timbered town of Celle with its old town centre, where you'll find more than 500 half-timbered houses and the 13th-century ducal castle, lies on the southern edge of the Lüneburger Heide. Celle is famous for its half-timbered architecture. Elaborately decorated houses from the 15th to 17th centuries adorn the old town and create a truly medieval atmosphere. Probably the most magnificent building is the Hoppener Haus from 1532: with its six storeys up to the gable, it is an extremely imaginative house, adorned with numerous ornaments. The ducal castle is the oldest building in the city, with parts dating back to the 13th century. The interesting furnishings of the four-winged complex, where Renaissance meets Baroque, include the oldest Baroque theatre still in use, the castle chapel, state chambers and the castle kitchen.

Celle also offers a wide range of shopping opportunities. The main shopping street is Zöllnerstraße, which has a colourful mix of individual shops and small boutiques behind the facades of magnificent Renaissance and historic half-timbered houses.

Lüneburg, and the surrounding area, can be experienced as a separate destination, but the Christmas market can also be experienced in conjunction with a trip to Hamburg, just 50 km away. Lüneburg is only half an hour away by train.
