Schmalkalden

Schmalkalden is located on the sunny side of the Thuringian Forest and is a lovely and nearly restored half-timbered town, which today is also a university town - and a destination for historical hitchhikers, art lovers and of course those who appreciate beautiful nature and the many active possibilities under the open sky.

The old town of Schmalkalden is a valuable testimony to central European town planning and more than 1000 years of architecture and cultural history await visitors. Explore the small alleys and enjoy the beautiful and well-maintained half-timbered houses and old stone arches. The Reformation has also left its mark on the city, and the late Gothic church of St. Stephen is one of the most important examples. George is a shining example. Wilhelmsburg Castle is also a gem of a Renaissance building, its imposing towers proudly marking its presence in the charming and picturesque city.

Thuringian Forest

Another excursion option is a drive through the Thuringian Forest. The forest is 150 km long and up to 35 km wide! The highest mountain in the Thuringian Forest is the "Grosse Beerberg" (982 m). Other important mountains are the "Grosse Inselsberg" (916 m) and the "Schneekopf" (978 m). If you drive through the Thuringian Forest, you will reach the winter sports town of Oberhof. Here you will find a ski arena with a capacity of 13,000 spectators. Take a walk on the Rennsteig with the beautiful view at the top.

Marine Aquarium Adventure Park

Discover the colourful underwater world of the tropical oceans. Erlebnispark Meeresaquarium offers beautiful and colourful corals, sea anemones, sharks and unique fish in a jumble of colours swimming around the aquarium.

Errlebnispark Meeresaquarium is the largest of its kind in Central Germany with a total area of 7,150 sqm. and over 60 aquariums. Erlebnispark Meeresaquarium has been in existence since 1994 and is a popular destination for families with children and curious travellers.

The tropical underwater world that can be experienced at Erlebnispark Meereaquarium is an unforgettable experience, even for adults, so be sure to set aside time to visit the large facility filled with exotic fish species, including the more dangerous ones. One of the main attractions is undoubtedly the large shark tank which holds 1 million litres of water, is 20 metres long, 10 metres wide and 5.4 metres deep. It is home to a number of shark species that thrive in the water. Don't miss the shark feeding, which takes place on Sundays at 3pm. They're usually hungry!

Bad Liebenstein

Since the 1600s, Bad Liebenstein has been the town where guests travelled from far and wide to enjoy the range of spa treatments on offer. So take a wellness break in Bad Liebenstein which is also the oldest spa town in Thuringia. If you are on holiday by car, Bad Liebenstein is easy to get to. Ever since the 17th century, the town has been a popular destination for guests who want to go on a spa break.

The city also offers a range of outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. During the winter months, skiing is also possible in the area. Today, around 8000 people live in the small, cosy town, which also offers great opportunities for eventful winter holidays.

The Suhl Museum of Arms

Visit the exciting Waffenmuseum in Suhl and if you are driving to the German state of Thuringia, it is recommended to stop by the exciting museum. The museum has three floors with exhibitions of different weapons and here visitors also get the whole history of weapon production. From the extraction of the raw materials to the craftsmanship and production of the different weapons.

Take your time and discover the interesting job and the fascinating history behind the demand for weapons in the 15th century. Suhl has been a centre for weapon production throughout history, and the museum can therefore provide an unusual insight into the production of pistols and rifles in particular. Modern weapons are also produced, as well as sports weapons for Olympic competitors, made in Suhl of course!

There is a display of pistol production and the tools used, and in general there is an excellent display of historical and modern weapons, duelling pistols, military weapons, precision weapons and an extensive display of air rifles.

Eisenach

Take a trip to Eisenach and visit the beautiful Wartburg Castle. The castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Take a tour of the various buildings, rooms and beautiful halls as well as the attached garden.
