About the hotel
Right in the heart of Viborg’s historic centre, Palads Hotel Viborg is more than just a place to stay – it’s part of the city’s story. Located at the beginning of the main pedestrian street, the hotel places you within easy reach of Viborg’s lakes, cathedral, and charming old town.
About the hotel
What makes Palads Hotel truly special is its rich history. The elegant main building dates back to 1899, originally built as a private residence before becoming a hotel in 1935 – making it the oldest hotel in Viborg. You can still feel this heritage throughout the property, from the classic architecture to the unique details that give the hotel its character. Over the years, the hotel has expanded into several neighbouring buildings, creating a distinctive and slightly eclectic atmosphere where no two stays feel exactly the same. It’s a place with personality, far from the standard feel of modern chain hotels.
Comfort and relaxation are at the heart of the experience. A generous breakfast buffet is served each morning, and many rooms feature private spa baths and saunas – perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. Guests also benefit from practical amenities such as free parking, Wi-Fi, and a relaxed, informal setting that makes it easy to feel at home.
Step outside and you’re immediately in the middle of Viborg’s charm. Stroll along the lakes, visit the impressive Viborg Cathedral, or explore the small shops and cafés in the old town. The surrounding area also offers beautiful nature, including Dollerup Hills and Hald Lake, perfect for a scenic day trip.

Viborg Cathedral
Explore Denmark with Risskov and drive yourself to the experiences that await. One of the many surprises that Viborg hides is its beautiful cathedral, whose history dates back to the 12th century. Along the way up through the ages, the church experienced several serious fires, with the last one razing it to the ground in 1726. As a result, not much remained of the beautiful cathedral, in fact, only the old crypt survived the ravages of time. The rest has been rebuilt and the present church was consecrated in 1876. In the crypt's southern chapel is the Well of St. Kjeld, where many sick people, and especially the blind, are said to have been healed. The walls and vaults of the cathedral were decorated by the artist Joakim Skovgaard and his assistants, who covered the walls and vaults of the cathedral with very colourful frescoes from the Bible story, from Adam and Eve to the end times, from 1901 to 1913. Find gay-friendly hotels in Viborg and the surrounding area and go on a self-drive holiday at your own pace with the whole family.
Mønsted Lime Mines
Mønsted Kalkgruber is located at Mønsted, south of Hjarbæk Fjord and west of Viborg. The limestone pits are caves in a limestone layer close to the surface, where lime has been quarried for many centuries, for example to produce mortar for building churches and monasteries. Mønsted Limestone Mines is the world's largest limestone mine and an endless labyrinth of mine galleries. Try the mine train in summer or see how many bats you can spot.
Hvolris Iron Age Village
At Skals Ådal, about 17 km north of Viborg, is Hvolris Jernalderlandsby, which is an open-air museum, which also includes a large nature area with a nature playground and small trails that lead around the area. Start by exploring the 'Timberlands', where there is an archaeological exhibition with several of the interesting finds unearthed around Hvolris. People have lived here since the Stone Age, around 6000 years ago. One of the special things about the Iron Age village is that the excavations are located next to the rebuilt houses and workshops, which are now part of the exciting and educational Iron Age environment. Throughout the year, a number of courses are held in various ancient crafts and there are also many activities during the holidays. Get your sword sharpened and take a trip back in time in a really fun and entertaining way at Hvolris Iron Age Village, a perfect destination for the whole family's summer holiday or as part of a weekend break or mini break in the Jutland region.
The Energy Museum
Enjoy a cheap weekend break in Jutland and visit this energy museum, which has experiences with lots of amps and volts. In fact, the exhibition covers a whole 15,000 square metres, filled with cool, exciting and very educational experiences about energy and the energy sources we have. Age doesn't matter, there's fun here for all ages and abilities. Activate your mobile phone and go on an energy-filled treasure hunt around the exciting exhibitions. Try exploring the open-air houses filled with electrical appliances from different eras, try out solar cells and see how the wind turbines work. Don't miss the 2-metre spark in the high-voltage laboratory, or try your hand at the amazing journey through the history of electrical communications, from the age of the telegraph to our modern-day mass communications. There are also changing special exhibitions throughout the year and they tend to be well attended. So a trip to the Energy Museum is certainly not a bad choice, and the whole family, young and old, is guaranteed a fantastic experience. The museum is an ideal destination for a family holiday in Denmark.
World map
Go on a cheap car holiday in Denmark and visit the World Map at Hobro. One day, some meadows were to be drained near Klejtrup Lake, south of Hobro, and a stone appeared that looked like Jutland. This prompted Søren Poulsen, a dancing cameraman, to build his own little world in the meadows. The new world was built between 1944 and 1969 and measures 45 x 90 metres. It was built by placing large stones on top of the frozen meadows and in the places where the worlds were to be. When the ice melted, the stones could be tilted into place with some difficulty. The equator is marked with red poles and the whole world map is reproduced with lakes, rivers and famous mountain ranges, so it's easy to send mum and dad to Australia, Borneo or Mount Everest if they want to. There's also an 18-hole mini-golf course on the World Map and in summer it's a great place to enjoy a sail in the Pacific Ocean, where even the little ones can join in, although there may be a few waves. Find a cheap summer holiday at Risskov and take the whole family on an adventure around the world on the 'World Map',
Skive
Skive has an exciting history and has become a commercial centre, with a network of pedestrian streets and plenty of shopping opportunities. The many specialty shops and small cosy boutiques are within a pleasant distance, it is simply not far to the next shop. There is always life and fun in the streets, especially around Rådhustorvet and Posthustorvet, where there are often activities and market days.
