A trip to St Martin's Church in the centre of the city is certainly an experience too, and despite its large size, it is still considered just a church. Also visit the Unterlinden Museum, housed in an old monastery. It houses Issenheim's world-famous altarpiece and Martin Schongauer's Passion Altar, with its 24 paintings both front and back, among other things, and the museum's collection also houses a number of paintings and sculptures from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance. There are also a number of modern works, so there really is something for every artistic taste. The old monastery certainly adds to the unique and exciting atmosphere of both the site and the exhibitions.

There are also plenty of charming little shops in Colmar, tucked away in the small streets, but it's in the old town that you'll find the best shopping. The many small shops with exquisite goods and interesting antique shops hide interesting stories to take home, so there are great opportunities to find just the little thing to give as a gift to someone special. There are also good opportunities to get something good to eat, and the excellent wines from the Rhine Valley in particular are likely to bring a few red cheeks.

The wine route in Alsace

A nice excursion is to take a ride on the so-called wine route, where you can stop in the many traditional villages along the way; Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Ribeauville and Kayserberg. Here you will find wine shops, good restaurants and beautiful half-timbered houses. Riquewihr is perhaps the most enchanting town on the Wine Route. Medieval ramparts line the town with its labyrinthine streets, hidden backyards and half-timbered houses. In Hunawihr you will find a stork park, which is also worth a visit. The stork is an important symbol in Alsace and is said to bring good luck and babies. For a time, the stork population in Alsace declined, and now much is being done to maintain the population, which is again considerable.

Turckheim

Turckheim is a cosy town located in Alsace just west of Colmar and on the area's beautiful wine route. In this cosy town there are several walks you can go on, which will give you a nice picture of the town. You can take the high route where you can walk from a hilltop and enjoy the view of the city's rooftops. As Turckheim is a wine town, it is also a good idea to take a walk and have a closer look at the many vineyards that surround the town. You can also enjoy a glass of good wine at one of the many taverns.

As you move around the city, it's also a good idea to take a closer look at its many beautiful old buildings. For example, walk past the city gate of France, which was once used as a trading point, mainly for trade with Switzerland. The Munster city gate is also interesting, as it was here that the witches were led through on their way to the stake. Also take the tour past the fine town hall, which dates back to the 17th century.

Castle Hohlandsbourg

Just outside Colmar, Château Hohlandsbourg is built on a hilltop with a unique panoramic view of Alsace and the Vosges Mountains. In good weather, it's possible to see the spire of the cathedral and the Swiss Alps from the castle, which dates back to the 13th century when it was home to the Habsburg dynasty, part of the largest princely house in Europe. The castle has been restored and is now a centre for cultural development. The castle is open to visitors, making for an exciting castle experience with stunning views for the whole family.

Obernai

Located 25 km southeast of the city of Strasbourg, in the heart of Alsace in France, the small town of Obernai is a nice stop on a driving holiday. The town has only about 11 000 inhabitants, but attracts plenty of tourists every year, not least because of its excellent wines and renowned gastronomy. Its location along the Alsace wine route also contributes to the influx of visitors. The larger city of Strasbourg, with the European Parliament and the European Court of Justice, has contributed to a revival of the formerly rural area.

Neuf-Brisach

Neuf-Brisach is a truly unique town with a town plan from 1698 designed by Vauban, a military engineer under Louis XIV. Vauban died in 1707 and Neuf-Brisach was his last major project and is considered his masterpiece. The city design is an octagonal fort with a square street. was damaged during World War II, but it is a unique example

on fortified architecture from the early 1700s. Today, the village is occupied by the UNESCO World Heritage List. Don't miss a guided tour through the village or visit the Vauban Museum, which tells the fascinating history of the town.

Bonhomme

Visit the small traditional village of Bonhomme, where you will find a few hotels, wine shops and restaurants. From here you can start a hiking or cycling tour to explore Alsace and the Vosges. In the Kayserberg Valley, between vineyards and mountains, you will discover on a hike the cultural richness and the beautiful nature of this region. Humbrecht-Trapp has been producing a wide range of tasty Alsatian wines with great care and love since 1620 - that is, for almost 400 years. Since its inception, the estate has passed from generation to generation and today comprises some 7.5 hectares of vines, spread around the town. Around 35,000 bottles of wine are produced annually, in a wide range that includes the seven official Alsace wines, as well as other varieties such as Crèmant, Grand Cru and Pinot.

Lac Blanc
