Fort Napoleon
In the dunes north of Ostend lies an impressive fort that has also had a turbulent history. The French general Napoleon built it in 1811 to defend against attacks on the port of Ostend, among other places. But the fortress has had more historical experiences, as it also played a role in the two world wars.
Today it houses a museum, bistro and restaurant, and is a great educational outing for the whole family.
Ostend
The 'city by the sea' offers many kilometres of beautiful beaches, where sunbathing and a refreshing dip in the North Sea are on the menu. But Ostend is also much more than beach life. The beautiful seaside resort has many historical and cultural things to offer visitors. From bunkers from the 2nd century to the present day. World War bunkers to fish markets and 19th century sailing ships.
There's plenty to keep you occupied, just take a stroll down the streets of Ostend up to Wapenplein, the main square, where there are great opportunities to shop around and enjoy the many shops and beautiful buildings that surround them. Don't forget to stop by St Peter and Paul's Church, Leopold Park and the many interesting museums.
Bruges
Bruges is a picture-perfect city where cobbled streets, historic market squares, and peaceful canals create a timeless atmosphere. Visitors can climb the Belfry for panoramic views, explore the medieval architecture, and enjoy local Belgian chocolate or waffles in a cozy café. With canal boat tours, horse-drawn carriage rides, and charming boutiques, Bruges is ideal for a relaxed, romantic getaway or a cultural day trip.
Museum of Freedom
'For Freedom museum' shows the bleak side of the Second World War in a dazzling, realistic way. No single inhabitant of the Zwin region and West-Zeeland-Flanders was spared hardship and oppression between 1940 and 1944 and it is this period in history that forms the museum's main theme.
The museum houses three collections. Patrick Tierssoone and Freddy Jones, two old school friends with a passion for history, have made available their unique collections of original vehicles and uniforms. The Belgian Aviation History Association, Bahaat, a recognised association of aviation archaeologists, provides the third and impressive display of excavated aircraft remains.
Discover World War II again at the 'For Freedom Museum', an exciting tour for the whole family.
Local market Roeselare
If you're visiting the town of Roeselare, Lokaalmarkt Roeselare is a great option. Located indoors in a beautiful building, the market is open every Friday from 2pm to 8pm. Cosy and friendly atmosphere with several stalls where local farmers sell fresh delicacies and food from the area. You can buy a snack, such as croque monsieur, cheese, bread, pancakes, or cake. Food can be enjoyed at the market, where beer, wine or coffee is also served at the bar. The market also has a children's corner. The delicacies at the market are of good quality.
