Büsum
Go on a beach holiday to Büsum for a real family holiday. Büsum is a very visited town and numerous tourists come year after year to the town. Find a cheap holiday at Risskov and drive to Büsum. Not many people know that just 400 years ago the town was located on an island - in the middle of the Wadden Sea. Only towards the end of the 1500s did Büsum become landlocked as a result of natural land reclamation. From the idyllic harbour it is only a few metres to the "Grünstrand" with its many beach curves and resting zones. The red and white striped lighthouse is the landmark of the spa town of Büsum. The spa town is also known for shrimping, walks by the Wadden Sea and a grassy beach. The romantic harbour is full of life and you can enjoy the atmosphere here. Find a cheap holiday with child-friendly hotels at Risskov and enjoy a cheap summer holiday in the south.
Helgoland
On a mini holiday in northern Germany, you can sail from Büsum to Helgoland. Helgoland has led a changeable existence throughout the ages. Colonised in the 8th century by the Frisians and later subjugated by Denmark and the Duchy of Schleswig. It became German in 1890 when the British traded it for Zanzibar. Its strategic location led to a strong fortification of the island already during World War I. Up to World War II, Hitler transformed it into a powerful submarine base. During World War II it was therefore also badly hit and after the war the British used it as a training target for bombers until they tried to blow it up on 18 April 1947. However, 6800 tonnes of explosives failed to destroy the island. In 1952 it was re-inhabited and rebuilt and today it is one of Germany's most popular holiday destinations and a duty-free zone.
Pirate Sea
Piratenmeer is a fantastic water park in Büsum, with plenty of experiences to tempt people of all ages. In addition to countless pleasures for the children in the form of large pools, water slides and salt water pools, a wide range of wellness treatments are also offered, complete with massage and sauna. In other words, Piratenmeer is a sure hit with the whole family.
Eider barrage
On the outskirts of Tønning in south-western Schleswig lies the Ejder Dam, which is quite a sight. When it was inaugurated in 1973, its purpose was to protect vulnerable land from storm surges. This was not least because of some severe flooding following a storm surge in 1962. At the same time, the dam was also intended to help regulate the water level in the River Ejderen. Take a cheap self-drive holiday to northern Germany and discover this place.
Heath
Heide is known for the largest uninhabited marketplace in Germany, where they have the popular Wochenmarkt every Saturday morning/afternoon. Go on a self-drive holiday to Heide and enjoy a nice day, where you can even go to the market and get yourself some bargains. You can find just about anything and also traditional items from the area.
It's also a good idea to take a walk in Heide and take a closer look at some of the town's fine buildings. Walk past the Church of St Jürgen, which was restored after a fire in 1560. Also walk past the old rectory, which is just opposite the church and was built back in 1739. The Postelheim on Südermarkt is built in the Neo-Renaissance style, while the Dreetörn-Hus, dating from 1733, is built in the Baroque style. These are just a few of the city's many impressive and interesting buildings.
Christmas market in Heide
18th November to 23rd December 2025
The Christmas Market in Heide is held at the Südermarkt Square in Heide, and is filled with cosy stalls and entertainment. For example, Santa Claus comes by every Sunday to greet the children. From Germany's largest Christmas market square, Heide's Christmas market spreads out into the town. The many stalls offer a wide range of Christmas specialities, such as mulled wine and pretzels, as well as a large selection of Christmas gift ideas.
In the stalls you can also find traditional handmade products side by side with beautiful, modern Christmas gifts.
At Heide's Christmas market, the Christmas spirit is guaranteed and the many German Christmas traditions are in the spotlight. At Risskov, we have a wide range of hotel deals that are the perfect starting point to visit not only the Christmas market in Heide, but also some of Northern Germany's many other Christmas markets in places like Lübeck, Flensburg or Hamburg.
Dithmarscher Wasserwelt
Visit Dithmarscher Wasserwelt, a large water park with fun for the whole family both indoors and outdoors. There's an indoor 50 m pool, outdoor pools, water slides, but also a bio sauna, Finnish sauna and 32 degree pool. The water park is a sure hit with the youngest members of the family.
Meldorf
Go on a cheap mini break in Germany and visit the cathedral town of Meldorf, which is packed with cultural experiences, including the rose garden and monastery quarter. On a self-drive holiday, it's also possible to visit the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum, where you can get an insight into the historical development of the area. Also take a walk down to the Miele, which flows through the town. Take a walk along the river and enjoy the atmosphere among the beautiful boats.
Toenning
Throughout its history, Tönning has repeatedly demonstrated its ingenuity and skill. With the Multimar Wattforum, they have once again created something unique in Schleswig-Holstein - a perfect combination of nature, knowledge and entertainment. The experimental exhibition playfully illustrates life in the Wadden Sea and its surroundings. It is a draw for the whole country and is also important for the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Vadehav National Park.
St. Peter-Ording
Explore the village of St. Peter-Ording in North Frisia, where you'll find 12 kilometers of paradise-like sandy beach, woodlands and large dunes. The area has been inhabited since the Viking Age and is a very popular excursion destination.
