Faaborg Museum

Enter the wondrous world of art. Faaborg Museum offers beautiful paintings by the famous Funen painters, sculptures, architecture and furniture art. Faaborg Museum was founded in 1910 by cannery owner Mads Rasmussen, who had a passion for art. Faaborg

The cosy market town of Faaborg is located on Faaborg Fjord in the south of Funen and has about 7000 inhabitants. Take a walk through the cosy streets and see the well-preserved old houses. From the harbour in Faaborg there are ferry connections to several islands in the South Funen archipelago such as Bjørnø, Lyø, Avernakø and Ærø. These interesting islands are like pearls on a string and are certainly worth a visit.

If you are interested in art or history, you can visit some of the town's museums: the Faaborg Museum has an exhibition on Funen painting, the Øhavsmuseet, which is housed in the old railway station from 1882, or the Arresten, which is an exciting museum for the whole family that gives an insight into prison life past and present.

Svanninge Hills

Funen is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. North of Faaborg, for example, lies Svanninge Bakker. Park your car and head out into this stunningly beautiful and hilly landscape, created during the Ice Age. In addition to being a geological area of interest, the area also contains an extremely rich plant and animal life, and it is recommended to bring binoculars.

The South Funen Archipelago

The South Funen Archipelago is the shallow waters south of Funen, home to more than 55 islands, islets and islets. A fine ferry system enables transport between the inhabited islands, where some of the islanders live mainly from farming, some fishing or commuting to jobs on the "mainland".

A good way to experience the South Funen archipelago is by hiking along the Øhavsstien, which at 220 km is one of Denmark's longest hiking routes. The Øhavsstien is a marked trail system from Faldsled in the west to Langeland in the east and Ærø in the south.

Svendborg

Svendborg is located in the south of Funen and is a maritime city with about 28,000 inhabitants. Svendborg's history goes back more than 750 years and the historic town centre invites you to stroll through the narrow streets and cosy courtyards surrounded by half-timbered houses. Svendborg is the second largest city on Funen, after Odense, and here you will find a good selection of shops, restaurants and cafés.

Svendborg is located on the Svendborg Sound near the Svendborg Sound Bridge, which connects Funen with the island of Tåsinge. From Svendborg Harbour you can take the ferry to Ærø, Drejø, Skarø, Hjortø or Birkholm if you want to visit the small islands in the South Funen Archipelago.

Svendborg is, due to its good location by the sea, a renowned shipping town, and there are still today several shipping companies in the city. In fact, Denmark's largest company originated in Svendborg when Captain Peter Mærsk Møller and his son Arnold Peter Møller bought a second-hand steamship in 1904 and formed A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg. In 2003, the company was renamed A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S, which is known throughout most of the world.

Naturama

Naturama is Svendborg's zoological museum, which opened way back in 1935. It houses exhibitions on various themes such as "Giants of the Sea", where you can see some impressive whale skeletons. The exhibits consist mainly of skeletons and stuffed animals, but you can also see live animals such as walking sticks, red ants and various wheel spinners such as the crossed spider.

The Japanese Gardens

Discover the 5500 m² of beautiful Japanese gardens in Broby, northwest of Faaborg. The stunning gardens are laid out in true Japanese tradition, with as many as 6 different styles spread across the area. Feel the tranquility as you walk among idyllic small lakes and streams, and enjoy this garden architectural gem. The Japanese Gardens also has a cosy café, which offers sushi and Japanese-inspired meatballs, among other things.

Egeskov Castle

Go on a self-drive holiday in Denmark and discover Europe's best preserved moated castle, built in 1554. Egeskov Castle is, without comparison, Funen's biggest tourist attraction. Surrounded by magnificent gardens and deep moats, the magnificent castle is like something out of a fairytale. See the Count's fascinating collection of rare cars and planes, ride the segway and get lost in Piet Hein's colossal maze of beech hedges.

Valdemar Castle

Explore Valdemars Castle on Tåsinge near Svendborg. The magnificent castle was built under Christian IV around the middle of the 17th century and has now been turned into a castle and manor museum. The owners of the castle, who have reached the 12th generation, also live in the castle. Guests are free to wander among the old furniture and paintings in the many magnificent rooms and lounges and be impressed by the large halls. In addition to the castle, there is also a Hunting and Trophy Museum on the grounds. Throughout the year, the area around Valdemars Castle is also used for events such as markets and concerts.

Glow Odense

Experience a true winter adventure when Glow opens the doors to its 6000 square metres of enchanting light landscape. Here, children can play and sense while adults explore Glow's Christmas market, or enjoy delicious food from various food trucks. Every week there is also on-stage entertainment from local artists to treat your ears.

The Funen Village

The Funen Village is an impressive open-air museum, built like a real Funen village as it might have looked in the 1800s. Here you walk among houses and farms, all of which originally stood in villages around Funen and the other islands. All along the way you will encounter some of the many interesting people who, in authentic dress, work in the village and with a smile tell and tell and answer your questions.

Danmarks Fugle Zoo

Experience true Funen farmhouse idyll in Denmark's Bird Zoo in Tommerup. The 5-hectare area contains as many as 800 different birds from all four corners of the world. H.C. Andersen's Childhood Home

Step into the beginning of the fairy tale for H.C. Andersen, with a visit to his childhood home in Odense. Here you can experience a reconstruction of the apartment where Hans Christian Andersen lived. Andersen lived 1807 - 1819 with his parents. The building was converted into a museum back in 1930 and is now a branch of the main H.C. Andersen Museum. Andersen's House, a short walk away. A visit here is almost unmissable on a mini break or weekend break in Odense.
