Castle Church Lutherstadt Wittenberg

See for yourself the place where Martin Luther's Reformation began. It was here, on the doorstep of the beautiful Castle Church in Wittenberg, that in 1517 the visionary priest published the 95 Theses, which became the start of the Reformation. What's more, it's a most impressive and beautiful church, both inside and out, so it's certainly worth a visit.

Wittenberg

Wittenberg is a beautiful university town in eastern Saxony-Anhalt, which is particularly known for its connection to Martin Luther and is therefore often referred to as 'Lutherstadt Wittenberg'. Throughout the city you'll find numerous interesting sights related to Luther's life and work, such as the Castle Church and Lutherhaus.

Luther House

Take a look inside the Lutherhaus, a former Augustinian monastery where Martin Luther once lived, which today houses a museum exhibition of various personal belongings and paintings. The permanent exhibition tells the story of Martin Luther's life and work during the Reformation. The Lutherhaus is an ideal destination for those interested in Christianity and history.

Rabenstein Fortress

The Rabentein fortress was built between 1209 and 1212 to keep peace on the road network between Wittenberg and Brandenburg. The castle is mentioned in texts in 1251 and again in 1277.

It was only after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 that the castle lost its military importance, so the inhabitants must be said to have had anything but a quiet existence. In 1298 Rabenstein was besieged, in the war of 1395 the castle was burnt down by an army from Magdeburg, and in the Thirty Years' War of 1636 the place was sacked by Swedish troops, to mention just a little of the battlefield but exciting history that the castle has brought with it from the 13th century.

Leipzig's Christmas market tradition has roots dating back to the 15th century. Over time, the city's unique cultural and culinary offerings have helped give the city and its Christmas markets an almost legendary reputation. With well over 300 stalls, it is one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany. Under the traditional Christmas tree in the centre of the city, the splendid atmosphere of Leipzig's Christmas market is created, with lots of decorations, lights and Christmas cheer in the streets.

Augustusplatz offers plenty of exciting opportunities and activities for children, families, young and old, with a fairytale forest, crafts, Santa visits and lovely smells from all directions. You'll also have the chance to enjoy a fantastic view of the city centre with a ride on the big Ferris wheel.

Behind the old town hall and in front of the 'Alter Handelsbörse' you can find a cosy craft market where you can admire a wide variety of crafts and handicrafts, ranging from foundry and ceramics to glassblowing and candle-making. All of this is set against a wonderful backdrop of Christmas food stalls selling roasted almonds, Glühwein and much more.
