Osterøy Ysteri

Bullahuset - Ole Bull's house

Many Norwegian musicians have been inspired at one time or another by Ole Bull's gentle and folk-like music, including Edvard Grieg and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.

Ole Bull was an accomplished violinist and composer who became world famous during the Romantic period, c. 1800-1870.

Visit Ole Bull's home, Bullshuset, a beautiful pink villa on Valestrandsfossen on Osterøy, just 45 minutes from Bergen. In summer there are guided tours, and the doors to the music hall and the composer's study are open to visiting guests.

Concerts are also regularly held here, making for a very special cultural evening on Osterøy. If you'd like to listen to some of Ole Bull's famous works, try searching for 'Soothsayer's Sunday'.

Salmon fishing in the fjords around Osterøy

There are excellent opportunities for salmon fishing in the fjords around Osterøy, just 45 minutes from the Norwegian capital Bergen. Try catching salmon from a boat with local guides departing from Osterøy, which is also Norway's largest inland island. Or just get out your fishing poles and find a peaceful spot to enjoy the joys of salmon fishing. Please note, however, that in Loneelva the salmon are a little smaller in size, but there are plenty of them before they reach the sea and get fat.

Troldhaugen - Grieg's last residence

Troldhaugen was the town where Edvard and Nina Grieg lived the last 22 summers of Edvard's life. The villa was completed in 1885 and is an interesting place to visit if you like Grieg. Since 1928 the villa has served as a museum with exhibits from Grieg's life and times.

Bryggen

Bergen

Try a trip to the top of Fløyen with the mountain railway, or Fløibanen, and experience the fantastic view of the mountains, the fjord and not least Bergen. Or head to Bryggen, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway. Experience the large market on the square, or relax in one of the many cafés and enjoy the bustling life that unfolds in the streets and alleys. Bergen also has a wide range of festivals and concerts at the city's venues, all year round.

Go on a lovely Christmas self-drive holiday to Bergen and visit the town's charming Christmas market - it's sure to put you in the right mood! The 'City of the Seven Mountains', Bergen, hosts a wonderful Christmas market every year, which opens at the 'Festplassen' near the small lake, 'Lille Lungegårdsvannet' in the city centre. There will be almost 80 individual stalls and stands selling everything from clothes and utility items to crafts, decorations and, of course, a variety of Christmas food and drink.

In addition to the many cosy stalls, there are also exciting activities for young and old, including a classic horse-drawn carousel and a large Ferris wheel from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and the sparkling lights as they are reflected in the lake. There is also a small cosy Christmas tree forest which bestmet also contributes to the atmosphere.

In the inviting warming room, which seats 240 people, you can relax and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere with the food and drinks you've bought from the stalls. The warming room is open to everyone and provides a quiet and comfortable setting to sit down and enjoy the Christmas treats. At the same time, the warming room also serves as an information centre and an office for the gods during the Christmas market.

When you buy hot drinks at the Christmas Market, they are poured into a special Bergen Christmas Market cup, which you are welcome to take home as a souvenir. The cup has a new design every year, so those who come back several years will be able to make a whole small collection of the cups.

The Christmas market and the 'Festplassen' are located directly in the city centre, so it is a good idea to take the opportunity to visit one or more of the interesting museums located here.
