The Funen Village

The Funen Village is an impressive open-air museum, built like a real Funen village as it might have looked in the 1800s. Here you walk among houses and farms, all of which originally stood in villages around Funen and the other islands. All along the way you will encounter some of the many interesting people who, in authentic dress, work in the village and with a smile tell and tell and answer your questions.

H.C. Andersen's Childhood Home

Step into the beginning of the fairy tale for H.C. Andersen, with a visit to his childhood home in Odense. Here you can experience a reconstruction of the apartment where Hans Christian Andersen lived. Andersen lived 1807 - 1819 with his parents. The building was converted into a museum back in 1930 and is now a branch of the main H.C. Andersen Museum. Andersen's House, a short walk away. Egeskov Castle

Go on a self-drive holiday in Denmark and discover Europe's best preserved moated castle, built in 1554. Egeskov Castle is, without comparison, Funen's biggest tourist attraction. Danish Railway Museum

Explore Denmark's Railway Museum, located just behind Odense Railway Station. Here you will find 21 tracks with fascinating old locomotives and carriages. See the royal carriages, get an insight into first-class travel and experience an impressive steam locomotive from 1868. Most carriages and locomotives are open for you to enter and explore. If you have children or grandchildren with you, they will love the Danish Railway Museum and all the activities that are organised to make the experience special for young and old alike.

Odense Zoo

Brandt's Cloth Factory

Brandts Klædefabrik is located in central Odense, close to the pedestrian street and dates back to the early 1900s. Carl Nielsen Museum

Take an exciting tour through the life of composer Carl Nielsen and his wife, sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen. See two fully reconstructed rooms from the two artists' last home on Frederikholm Canal with all the original furnishings. The exhibition is chronological, so you get the whole story from start to finish. In addition, the museum's opening hours are often adapted to the concerts by the Odense Symphony Orchestra in the Odense Concert Hall, giving you plenty of opportunities to extend the experience.

The Viking Museum Ladby

Don't miss the very special Viking Museum Ladby, located next to Kerteminde Fjord. The museum is quite unique as it has Denmark's only ship burial from the Viking Age; the Ladby Ship. In 2011, the museum started a project to reconstruct the Ladby King's burial ship. With the help of a professional boat builder and 30 volunteers, the finished ship was ready in May 2016. It was launched on 14. May of the same year to great media attention.

Helnæs

Go on a summer holiday on Funen and take a trip to the southwest Funen peninsula, Helnæs, which consists of two very different areas. Experience the contrast between the flat landscape of Helnæs Made and the domed terrain of the Bobaks. Here you are guaranteed some lovely walks, wrapped in Funen idyll. Helnæs Lighthouse in the south-western corner of the peninsula dates from 1901 and rises 28 metres into the air.

H.C. Andersen House

If you're on holiday in Denmark and passing through Funen, then you should stop by H.C. Andersens Hus, in the centre of Odense, where you will get an exciting and quite unique insight into the life of the poet. The exhibitions include handwritten notes, drawings and papercuts, as well as entire rooms decorated exactly as when H.C. Andersen lived and grew up in Odense.

Møntergården

Experience the city's cultural history at Møntergården in Odense, beautifully located in the old town. Here you will find a wealth of beautiful and charming sights with narrow alleys, half-timbered houses, courtyards and buildings from the 1500s onwards. The exhibitions include an exciting Funen interpretation of Danish and world history.

Odense Domkirke

Visit the large, beautiful Odense Cathedral. The church is also known as Saint Canute's Church, named after Canute the Saint, who in 1086 was murdered nearby. Today, the skeleton of Canute the Saint is on display in the cathedral's crypt and provides a historical experience.

The Christmas market in Odense is a true time travel back to H.C. Andersen's time, and is located in the charming old town close to H.C. Andersen's House. Take a mini break or weekend break in Odense and experience Christmas as it was in the early 1800s, when the world-famous storyteller lived and grew up in the city.

There's a special feeling in the air as Christmas approaches in Odense. Rosengårdcentret is decked out in its finest Christmas finery, both inside and out, and the city's cosy pedestrian street is decked out with glittering hearts and decorations that form a ceiling of light over Vestergade and Kongensgade.

Christmas in Odense kicks off when the big Christmas tree on Flakhaven is lit, usually with lots of expectant spectators of all ages. And from here it's not long until the city's big Christmas market gets underway. In 2018, it had the largest Christmas tree in Denmark.

The charming H.C. Andersen Christmas Market is open the first two weekends in December, transforming the beautiful old town of H.C. Andersens Hus into a huge Christmas market as it looked in the early 1800s. The theme has been running since 2013, when it was decided to "have Christmas as in the Old Days at H.C. Andersen's time". Everything is of course built around H.C. Andersen's famous fairy tale characters. Every year, more than 50,000 children and adults visit the cosy Christmas market, which almost feels like a journey back in time to Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen's childhood. The market has around 65 stalls where you will find everything your heart desires from Christmas items, gift ideas, crafts, clothing, toys and much more. Enjoy a nice cup of mulled wine to warm your hands and eat a few of the fluffy Funen apple slices. In addition to the many cosy stalls, there is also plenty of entertainment, such as horse-drawn carriages, historic merry-go-rounds, livery men, jesters and Christmas choirs, all of which help to add to the historical feel and atmosphere.

Just a few kilometres west of Odense, you will find the beautiful nature area around Langesø Estate, where a very charming Christmas market is held every year. Many Funen residents have a tradition of visiting the Langesø market every year with the whole family, either to find just the right Christmas tree, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere with a cup of hot mulled wine and a good portion of apple slices in a cosy setting.

If you have some extra time on your Christmas driving holiday, you can visit Funen's biggest Christmas market, held every year in the stunning surroundings of Egeskov Castle. You can also experience the magnificent and very special Christmas exhibition, LUMINIS. Here, the gardens' high hedges and trees are illuminated and decorated with graphic works of art and a huge sound and light show is projected onto the castle wall in a large and explosive performance.

Christmas market in Nyborg

Visit the cosy Funen Christmas market when, during the first two weekends of December, the 'Christmas in the Old Royal Town' in Nyborg is set up. The town's charming streets are decorated, and the Christmas spirit spreads over large parts of the town, where the church, the library, the museum 'Borgmestergården' and the town's cultural centre 'Bastionen' open up for lots of Christmas fun and activities for people of all ages.

The Christmas market is located in the town's main square, where the scent of roasted almonds, mulled wine, cinnamon and apple slices accompanies you around the many cosy stalls, where you will find everything from handicrafts to clothing, toys and trinkets of all kinds. The cosy wooden stalls are specially brought in, directly from Germany, creating a classic and traditional atmosphere.

At the town's museum, 'Borgermestergården', you'll find everything from furs, elves and sweets to gingerbread, porcelain and crafts in the cosy stalls. Stop by the honey stall, the brush binder, the sideboard and the tombola. During both weekends, the museum has an exciting programme where you can experience everything from the preparation of Christmas pies to the baking of cookies in the kitchen. There will be live music, storytelling and Christmas party entertainment, and regular visits from some of the museum's elves, some of whom may be up to a bit of mischief.

All this and much more can be experienced in the beautiful old royal town of Nyborg, which offers a very special historical setting. The town actually has more than 800 years of Danish history, and is home to the oldest royal castle in the Nordic countries, Nyborg Castle, which dates back to 1170.

The Christmas expert, Daniel Røde, who is behind Denmark's biggest Christmas blog, has ranked 'Christmas in the old Kongeby Nyborg' among the five most nostalgic Christmas markets in the Nordic countries. In 2017, the Christmas market in Nyborg had more than 25,000 visitors.
