Åhus

Åhus is a well-preserved medieval town where you can find the remains of churches, palaces, city walls and a monastery ruin. With its fine harbour promenade and everything from charming cafés to reputable restaurants, it makes for a great day out. Here you can also visit the factory that makes the famous Absolut Vodka and take a guided tour of their visitor centre.

In the Iron Age and Viking Age, Åhus was an important trading town. During the 20th century it became known for its eel fishing. At the smokehouse you can buy smoked eel and if you want to participate in a real eel guild, there is no better place than Åhus Gästis in September. But book your table well in advance.

Don't miss a visit to Åhus' beautiful sandy beach. Bring towels and swimwear and spend the day on the fine white sand. The shallow water and ice cream sellers make it very child-friendly. Outside the bathing season, you can take the most beautiful walks along the water.

Åhus winery offers guided tours through the vineyard, which ends with a wine tasting from their own grapes.

The Water Kingdom and Pulken

In late March and early April, the Vattenriket - a nature area with many lakes, rivers and wetlands - sees large numbers of cranes resting for a few days before continuing their northward migration.

At the "Pulken", a kind of bird tower in the area, you can see the cranes foraging during the day and flying in large flocks at dusk to the overnight sites out in the Vattenriket. In recent years, 3,000-5,000 cranes have been seen at the same time.

There is a car park near "Pulken". Remember to bring good binoculars.

In the northern part of the area there is an outdoor museum, which describes the great botanical and ornithological values of the area. The Pulken Museum is also accessible for wheelchair users, who can reach the platform and enjoy the view and the bird life.

Kristianstad

Visit Skåne Län on a family holiday to Sweden. Find a cheap self-drive holiday or a cheap weekend break for the whole family at Risskov and get away to Kristianstad, which has plenty to offer. It's a nice place to shop, and you can also find small cafés and shops with art from Skåne. You can also visit the film museum, where they have interesting exhibitions.

The town was founded in 1614 by the Danish King Christian IV as a fortress town to serve as Skåne's bulwark against Sweden. In 1612, Swedish troops had destroyed the important trading town of Væ in north-eastern Skåne. Christian IV encouraged the citizens of Væ to move to the new town of Kristianstad. Kristianstad still has its founder Christian IV's monogram, a 4 in a crowned C, in its coat of arms and uses it extensively on lamp posts and other municipal installations. It is the only city in the world to have the monogram of a foreign king in its coat of arms. Find child-friendly hotels in the area and set off on a family holiday at your own pace with Risskov.

Bäckaskogs Castle

There are many options for a self-drive holiday in Sweden and have a real family holiday. Risskov has a great selection of weekend breaks and family-friendly trips, so why not get behind the wheel and go on a cheap mini holiday and, among other things, experience Bäckaskogs Castle, which is beautifully situated on the promontory between Lake Iöv and Lake Oppman and is a very popular destination. You can enter the castle, which also has a good restaurant.

Naturreservatet Brösarps Backar

The Brösarps Backar nature reserve is not large, but still worth a visit.

In spring, first anemones and later poppies bloom. However, they are protected and must not be picked.

In summer, it's also beautiful to hike up to the heights and look out over the sea and apple orchards.

Ravlunda Church

The church was built in the 13th century and expanded in the 15th century. The church, located just south of Brösarpsbackar, has wonderful frescoes. The site of the church is very beautiful - check the opening hours in advance so you can enjoy the interior.

In the cemetery lies the author Fritjof Nilsson Piraten with the following inscription on his tombstone:

"Here lie the ashes of a man who usually put off everything till tomorrow. But he changed at his last, and actually died on January 31, 1972."

Wanås Slott

Wanås Castle dates back to the Snapphani era, but is today best known for its fantastic modern art exhibitions. In a large park behind the castle, modern "outdoor art" is displayed in a large format. The castle is very beautiful, as is the park, even if you are not an art lover.

Kivik

Find a cheap summer holiday or winter holiday and drive yourself to Skåne in Sweden on a real family holiday. Find child-friendly hotels at Risskov in the area around Kivik in eastern Skåne. Kivik is an old fishing community about 20 km north of Simrishamn, which comes alive in the summer months. The town is best known for Kiviksmarknad (held in July every year), the author Fritjof Nilsson Piraten (wrote "Bombi Bitt og jag") and the apple market every autumn. There are great opportunities for an active holiday in the beautiful area. Start with a stroll in the old fishing community of Kivik. Find cheap hotel accommodation at Risskov and drive to Kivik.
